I acknowledge the inherent irony of a book about the indescribable. The Old Master bows to this fact in the opening passage of their great work.
The Dao De Jing (also titled: The Classic of the Way and Its Virtue, The Book of the Way, the Lao Tzu, The Laozi, and the Tao Te Ching among others) was possibly penned by the sage Lao Tzu (Old Boy) or was potentially the product of many hands over centuries. Likewise, its date of composition can be set in the late Spring and Autumn Period or early in the Warring States period at some point between the fifth and sixth centuries BCE. It seems appropriate that questions surrounding a book of timeless mysteries remain equally unanswerable.
Despite the uncertainty of its origin, this collection of poetic sayings is the second most translated book into the English language, surpassed only by the Christian bible. Each translation brings with it the translator’s own poetic sensibilities and has its own unique insight and merit. With great variance between them, it is difficult to say that any sort of definitive version exists; indeed, the work you are currently reading certainly does not claim to be one.
