A New Start

oving day was longer and not what I expected. We were on the road for what seemed forever and didn't even reach our new hometown. Dad insisted that we would feel better about the move if we got a good meal and some needed rest. All Mom wanted was a soak in a tub and what she called beauty sleep. Dad chuckled at that, which got him a poke in the ribs.
No one asked me what I wanted, nor did they ever ask if I even wanted to move. I think they just figured, Oh, Tinsley is just a kid, so he'll do what we say.
At least supper was good, and I enjoyed a great big banana split with a cherry right on top! The next morning, along with the roosters (and yes, I heard one), we were right back on the road.
This whole move came about because Dad got laid off from his job. He was there for five years and made a very good wage, from what I heard Mom say. Mother was a schoolteacher in a Christian school. It was the summer, so she had resigned and planned to find work at the public school.
We were moving from a city in the East to a small town in the South. I was ready to get to our new life. The town was known to me as Appleton, USA. Dad had received an offer to work for a manufacturing plant that processed apples and turned them into other products. He would be a plant manager, which sounded important, but Dad said he would make a lot less than back East.
As we drove into Appleton, I thought, I sure could use a tall glass of apple juice from that new job of Dad's.
He had located a house not far from his job and close enough to the school I would attend, so I could either walk or ride my bike. It appeared to be a quiet
