About this ebook

In #1 New York Times bestseller Kelley Armstrong's latest thriller, the hidden town of Rockton is about to face a challenge none of them saw coming: a baby.

Every season in Rockton seems to bring a new challenge. At least that's what Detective Casey Duncan has felt since she decided to call this place home. Between all the secretive residents, the sometimes-hostile settlers outside, and the surrounding wilderness, there's always something to worry about.

While on a much needed camping vacation with her boyfriend, Sheriff Eric Dalton, Casey hears a baby crying in the woods. The sound leads them to a tragic scene: a woman buried under the snow, murdered, a baby still alive in her arms.

A town that doesn’t let anyone in under the age of eighteen, Rockton must take care of its youngest resident yet while solving another murder and finding out where the baby came from - and whether she's better off where she is.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong again delivers an engaging, tense thriller set in perhaps the most interesting town in all of contemporary crime fiction.

Well now, I felt like the last Rockton story wasn't my favorite, but this one roars back into the series that I've come to love. Casey's stubborn refusal to let the mystery drop until the bitter end brings out a whole host of new characters and politics out in the surrounding forest communities.

    3.5 Stars

While on a camping trip in the woods, Detective Casey Duncan stumbles across the body of a murdered woman half-buried in the snow with a crying baby in her arms. Soon Casey and her partner, Sheriff Eric Dalton, are on the trail of a vicious killer who has no qualms about leaving an innocent and helpless baby to freeze to death in the harsh winter of the Yukon.

In this latest installment in Armstrong's Rockton series, the murder investigation and search for the baby's parents serve as a catalyst for additional world-building. The revelation of the killer's identity and motive take a back seat to the more in-depth details about the various groups residing alongside the small isolated town. While this information is very intriguing, especially the practices and rivalries of the "settlers" and the "others", the lack of focus on the mystery is disappointing and diminishes the tension and suspense of the storyline.

Casey's internal musings on the effect motherhood, or the lack thereof, would have on her relationship with Eric are excessively repetitious. Yes, this is something they need to consider, but does it have to occupy Casey's every waking moment?

Despite these issues, the setting and characters are very appealing and I hope that Armstrong will be continuing with the series.

Alone in the Wild by Kelley ArmstrongRockton / Casey Duncan series #5. Thriller. Best read in series order. In the remote Alaskan town where people pay to hide from the world, children aren’t allowed. When Casey finds a live baby wrapped in the arms of a dead woman, her first instinct is to investigate, but she sets it aside to save the infant. Casey becomes the de facto mother while trying to track down the missing mother. Casey and Eric discuss terms of “what if” as they do their jobs keeping the town safe. Riveting with expanded characters from outside of town boundaries.

This was my favourite Rockton novel so far. While on a camping vacation with Dalton, Casey finds a crying baby and a murdered woman. She is determined to find the baby’s family, if she can.

Casey and Eric are on a well-earned camping trip away from their duties at Rockton when they discover a dead woman with a baby hidden under her coat. They suspect the woman is a hostile and that she has been murdered. They wonder if she stole the baby and the parents are searching for her or, since it is a winter baby, a burden few are willing to accept in the Yukon wilds, if she was abandoned. Still, Casey and Daniel are determined to find the parents to discover what did happen and, if she was stolen from them, return her. The search will take them to the two other settlements, something that is sure to put them in considerable danger.Alone In the Wild is the fifth installment in Kelly Armstrong's Casey Duncan series and is quite the adventure. The story picks up speed right from the first page. There are some draggy parts especially as Casey and Eric debate what to do with the baby but, overall, the novel retains its fast pace throughout. Casey is a strong female protagonist, smart as well as tough but still with flaws that make her easy to relate to. Eric is also well-rounded, capable and extremely likable, a perfect match for Casey. Other characters are also interesting but less three-dimensional. often split between good and evil, perfect foils to the beautiful but wild and dangerous setting in the Yukon and adding to a dystopian feel to the story despite or perhaps because of the occasional references to a normal world to the south.Alone in the Wild can be read as a standalone but why do that when this is such a well-written and compelling series. I am already looking forward to the next book in the series. Definitely a high recommendation from me. Thanks to Netgalley and St Martin's Press for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review

Series Info/Source: This is the fifth book in the Rockton series. I got this book from the library.Story (4/5): This story deals with a baby and a dead woman that Casey finds in the woods. Casey and Eric are trying to find the baby’s original parents so that they can return the baby to them. The story ties in with the Settlements and the hostiles that exist in the area outside of Rockton; a lot of mysteries around these communities are revealed. I did feel like this story was a bit...tired...compared to others in this series. I am hoping this series comes to a close soon before it gets too worn out. Characters (4/5): I really love Casey and Eric and continue to enjoy reading about them. There are some new characters introduced but none of them really had a lot of staying power or were very engaging.Setting (5/5): I always love this secluded setting in the middle of the Yukon wilderness. I love reading about what it takes to survive out there and the unique challenges the characters face. Writing Style (5/5): This is very well written and easy to read. I always enjoy Armstrong’s writing style. I do feel like this series and these characters are getting a bit tired, so I am hoping she wraps up this series in the next book (I actually thought that this fifth book was supposed to wrap it up, but it doesn’t really seem quite finished yet).Summary (4.5/5): Overall while this was a good addition to the Rockton series it wasn’t my favorite book of the series. There just didn’t seem to be as much tension in this book and the focus really strayed from Rockton out to the people around Rockton. Some of the mysteries revealed weren’t as interesting or mysterious as I thought they were going to be which was a bit of a letdown. I plan on continuing the series but hope it wraps up soon.

Sixth in this series, another to which I always look forward. Rockton, is a unique community and the setting of the Yukon is one to which I'm drawn. Enjoy seeing what these community members are up to, and what the new storyline will be. There have been some doozies. In this outing Casey finds a dead woman, sheltering a very alive baby. Who the baby belongs to and who the dead women is, as well as who killer will set Eric, Casey and Storm on the hunt. We will see much more of the settlers, inside their settlements and some of their members will play an important part. We will also get a closer look at some of the hostiles, never a safe bet. This series is an original one and the characters are a strange, mix, all have interesting backstories, though some are still not revealed. The storyline moves at a fast pace and the tension ratchets up as the story progresses. I eagerly await the next.ARC from Netgalley.

Oh, I have been eagerly awaiting the next entry in Kelley Armstrong's 'Rockton' series. The fifth book, Alone in the Wild, releases today - and it's a fabulous read! For those of you who haven't read this series yet (and you need to!), Rockton is a hidden, off the grid town up in the wilds of the Yukon. The residents? Yeah, they're all running from something or hiding from someone. Nobody asks too many questions. But even this town needs some laws - and someone to enforce them. That's where Detective Casey Duncan comes in - she was a homicide cop 'down south'. She and Sheriff Eric Dalton are partners at work - and at home. The first four books have let us get to know the lead characters, the residents, the dynamics and follow along as Casey and Eric work cases. In Alone in the Wild, the pair are on a rare weekend off, camping out in the woods when Casey finds a baby - alive, but in the arms of a dead woman.....What makes this series one of my absolute favourites? I am fascinated with the setting and Armstrong's world building. A town full of secrets offers up so many possibilities for storytelling. And the idea of a hidden town? Who's to say there isn't? Armstrong has slowly eked out the details of the town and what lies beyond it's fences over the course of the last four books. In this entry, most of the action and story takes place outside the town in the wilds of the Yukon. Rockton residents aren't the only ones in the area. There are those who have chosen to leave town and make their home elsewhere in the wilderness. There are the First Settlement residents who live a rougher but recognizable life. But, there are also Hostiles - people who have reverted to an almost animalistic state. And a few who live alone. I've been itching to find out more about these 'outsiders' and Alone in the Wild finally gives us some answers. But there are still questions and more to learn. I'm hooked! What else? The characters. Casey is a strong female lead - tough, intelligent and determined - but not perfect. Eric is just as well drawn. The two together make a great team. I'm not a big romance reader, but Armstrong does it well. Their relationship is believable, not 'over the top' and enhances the book, rather than being the main focus. The main core of residents are very eclectic (and dangerous) and I enjoy what they bring to the books as well. I must say, I very much like the new addition of Storm the dog - her chuffing and baleful looks speak volumes. And last, but certainly not least are the mysteries/cases in every book. They're unpredictable, intriguing and impossible to figure out ahead of the ending. Twists and turns along the way kept me guessing. And the action had me on the edge of my seat.Sorry, one more thing - the writing. Armstrong's work is just so, so...well, so readable! And addictive. I am immediately engrossed in the first few pages of her novels and get quite annoyed when someone interrupts me! This reader can't wait for the sixth book!

Note: Slight spoilers for previous books in this series. This is the fifth installment of the series that so far includes City of the Lost, A Darkness Absolute, This Fallen Prey, and Watcher in the Woods. Background:Casey Duncan is a homicide detective in the town of Rockton, a hidden place in the Yukon that takes in people on the run. Years earlier she killed her former boyfriend - not that she went to meet him intending to kill him, and not that he didn’t deserve it, but it happened, and it haunts her. It also made her “eligible” for life in this town, especially because the sheriff there, Eric Dalton, needed a detective, and Casey was a police detective with experience with solving murders. Rockton only has around 200 residents, but they are people, as Casey understands, who have “either done bad shit or have got serious baggage.”Since the series began, Casey and Eric have entered into a close personal relationship, as well as being partners on the job. Casey has now been in Rockton sixteen months. This “episode” focuses on other settlements in the area besides Rockton. Over the years, residents from Rockton have relocated into the wilderness for various reasons. Rockton people refer to most of them as "settlers," but some are known as “hostiles” or “wild people.” Those in the latter group are primitive and dangerous, and there are a number of theories about how they got that way. Casey and Eric finally learn the answers in this book. While on a weekend camping getaway, they accidentally discovered a murdered woman holding a still-alive baby. The woman showed signs of being a “settler” who had at one time been a “hostile.” Hostiles have filed teeth, primitive tattoos, ritual scarring, body paint, and tattered clothing. This woman had some of those traits but now looked more civilized. She also was clearly not the mother, and Casey and Eric were determined to find out why she was killed and who committed the crime. Moreover, they wanted to locate the baby’s parents and if possible, return the infant to them. What they didn’t count on was getting attached to the child. Nor did they anticipate the danger the killer still posed. Evaluation: As always, Armstrong had me guessing until the denouement, which followed a tense run-up with everyone in danger, and with almost everyone under suspicion. Armstrong is one of my favorite authors, and I enjoy all of her work.

Another hit in the Rockton series and actually this one was out of the ballpark! The author gives us our usual suspense, murder, intrigue, and even some light comedy. As usual, this book was well written and it has the characters of Eric Dalton and Casey growing even more - especially with a baby involved! We don't deal as much with the townspeople as we usually do, we deal and learn more about, the outsiders and the more wild people and these groups can be a little frightening. Kelly has brought in new characters that I hope are better fleshed out and used more in later books.*ARC supplied by the publisher.

This was fantastic! I have been a big fan of Kelley Armstrong's Rockton series for quite some time so I was pretty eager to get my grubby hands on this newest installment. I went into this book with extremely high expectations and I was not disappointed. This book grabbed my interest in the first few pages and never let go. I had an incredibly hard time setting the book down anytime life got in the way. I enjoyed every moment that I spent reading this book. This is the fifth book in the Rockton series which I think is best read in order. Casey and Eric want some time alone together so they take a quick camping trip. While Eric is off hunting, Casey hears a noise and discovers an infant in the arms of a dead woman buried in the snow. Casey needs to not only solve the murder of the dead woman but find out if someone is looking for the baby all while trying to care for the infant. This was a wonderful and complex mystery. There were so many pieces of the puzzle that needed to be found in order to really see the big picture. I liked getting the chance to go along with Eric and Casey as they visited some of the other groups that live near Rockton. There were a lot of twists and turns in this story and I was never quite sure what would happen next. At times, it almost felt like the more I learned the less I knew as a new piece of information would negate everything I thought I had figured out.The story was exciting and there were a few times that I was rather worried about how things might turn out. I love the fact that their dog, Storm, is a constant companion and a rather large part of the story who gets some excitement of her own. We also get the chance to learn a few things about some of the residents of Rockton and it was entertaining to see how a baby could shake things up.I would highly recommend this series to others. This is a very well done and original series with likable yet flawed characters. I cannot wait to read more of this wonderful series!I received a digital review copy of this book from St. Martin's Press - Minotaur Books via NetGalley.

Alone in the Wild by Kelley Armstrong  is a fast-paced and compelling mystery. Although this  latest release is the fifth installment in the Casey Duncan /Rockton series, it can easily be read as a standalone. However, I highly recommend the previous books as well.

After months of little crime, Detective Casey Duncan and her boyfriend Sheriff Eric Dalton take off a few days to camp in the woods by themselves. But when Casey hear an unexpected sound in the forest, she, along with her dog Storm, are hot on the trail. When her instincts prove to be correct, she makes two stunning discoveries: a murdered "hostile" and a very much alive baby. Who does the baby belong to? But most importantly, who killed the woman protecting the infant?

Despite not allowing anyone under the age of eighteen,  Casey and Eric are granted permission to keep the baby in Rockton until they locate her family. Casey has mixed feelings about caring for the baby and she is surprised by how easily Dalton steps into a foster father role. Despite her conflicted emotions, the couple juggle childcare duties with their search for the baby's family.

Although solving the murder is not within her jurisdiction, Casey cannot help but ask probing questions as their investigation takes them out into the surrounding wilderness.  With little interaction with the two settlements and "hostiles", there is not much doubt the baby is most likely from one of these areas. Their first inquiry provides an interesting lead, but both Casey and Eric have doubts about the motivation for these revelations.  They feel obligated to check out the information but they are also keeping an open mind as they continue asking questions within the other settlements around them.

After stumbling across former Rockton resident Maryanne, Casey seizes the chance to find out more about the woman who has recently escaped from the hostiles. Maryanne is fragile but she is finally ready to tell much of her story. Dalton and Casey learn invaluable information about the tactics used by the hostiles to keep their group under control.   Will these new details help them on their quest for the baby's family?

Alone in the Wild is a fascinating mystery with a clever storyline, a cast of eccentric but likable characters and a beautiful but harsh setting. Casey and Eric continue to grow and evolve as they balance their close relationship with law enforcement duties. With much of the investigation taking place outside of Rockton, this fascinating peek into the various groups offers intriguing insight into the dynamics and beliefs of each settlement.  Kelley Armstrong  brings this multi-layered  mystery to a poignant but completely satisfying conclusion. Old and new fans of the outstanding Casey Duncan /Rockton series are sure to enjoy this latest outing.

Casey Duncan and her boyfriend Sheriff Eric Dalton are on a camping vacation when Casey hears a baby crying. This leads to a dead body of a woman who had apparently once been a hostile. She's cradling a tiny baby. Casey and Eric become busy, first, trying to take care of the baby when the youngest person in Rockton is eighteen, second, trying to find out who killed the woman who was sheltering the baby, and, third, trying to find the baby's parents and decide is she should be returned to them. This whole baby issue brings up issues Casey and Eric both have been burying. Casey had never considered the possibility of having a child both because of her job and because of injuries she suffered when she was younger. Eric had also never thought of a child but he's as concerned with taking a child from parents because they can probably give it a better life. After all, the Dalton's did take him from his settler parents which has caused all sorts of conflicts in his life.As Casey and Eric investigate the crime, we get a chance to see into two of the settler encampments and also see the traders who are still another group. Casey has long wanted to know more about the hostiles who threaten the town of Rockton and she also gains some information about them during this investigation. The story was filled with action and well-developed characters. I love the setting of these stories since it is a landscape that is completely foreign to me and one I know I couldn't survive. I love that we are getting to know Casey and Eric better in each new entry in this series.
