Chapter 1
crossroads
Once upon a time…five years ago to be exact, there were two kids in the first grade class at Moondrop Academy in Flaxdale, California. The two kids’ names were Brooklyn Washington, nicknamed Brook, and Braxton Sanford, nicknamed Brax. Brook grew up in Flaxdale, which is an urban city with a lot of people and a lot of action. Brax moved to Flaxdale from Poopscoop, Arizona, which is a quiet and small suburban town. It just so happened that Brax’s family moved right next door to Brook’s family, but they did not meet each other until the first day of school.
Moondrop Academy is an all-boys first grade through eighth grade school. The teacher of their first grade class was Mrs. Flatbottom. She just so happened to seat Brook & Brax right next to each other in class. They instantly became the best of buddies. They were like two peas in a pod, like peanut butter and jelly, or like cereal and milk.
Wherever Brook went, Brax went. Wherever Brax went, Brook went. They ate lunch together every day. They went to recess together every day. They also walked home together every day, just three short blocks away from Moondrop Academy. Little did they know that fate would bring them even closer together and also challenge them to be great kids for the school and for the city.
One rainy afternoon while walking home from school, two third-grade bullies nicknamed Puke and Lil Dumps approached Brook & Brax. Puke and Lil Dumps bullied most of the younger kids in school by doing bad things, such as tripping them, making them fall to the ground, taking their lunch money, playing pranks…the list goes on and on. One day, Puke and Lil Dumps saw Brook & Brax walking home, so they decided to take advantage of the opportunity to torment the unsuspecting first graders. They cornered Brook & Brax and took their backpacks. They opened the zippers and began to slam all of their books onto the wet sidewalk. Then they began kicking their books into the street gutter.
Hey, why did you do that?
asked Brook with a huge lump in his throat.
This is what you nerds get,
said Puke.
Yeah, what you nerds get,
repeated Lil Dumps.
You guys think you are so smart, but you’re not very smart now. Ha ha ha ha,
Puke laughed as he kicked the last book off of the sidewalk.
You know why, huh? Do you really want to know why?
asked Lil Dumps sarcastically. ’Cause you two clowns stink and smell like nerd soup.
And I really hate nerd soup,
affirmed Puke.
Well, that’s not very nice,
responded Brax before his lips began to tremble uncontrollably.
Oh, yeah?
asked Puke as he towered in front of Brook & Brax. He then viciously stomped on their feet. What are you going to do about it, chumps?
As the pain set in from the violent stomps, Brook & Brax had to make a quick decision. Should they defend themselves and stand up to Puke and Lil Dumps and risk getting punched in the belly, or should they run to live and fight another day?
They thought about it intently and slowly turned to each other and locked eyes. It was at this time that their thoughts were truly in sync.
Run!
they yelled. Run for your life!
Brook & Brax ran as fast as they could around the block and through the neighborhood with Puke and Lil Dumps in hot pursuit. They ran through alleys and backyards trying to escape. They didn’t run home because they did not want to show Puke and Lil Dumps where they lived. They figured if they could lose them, then they could go back for their backpacks and books, but Puke and Lil Dumps would not give up so easily.
Brook & Brax were getting so tired from running through the neighborhood obstacle course that they began to breathe heavily. They knew that they could not keep this pace up for much longer. As soon as they turned the next corner, they noticed a group of stores, so they ran into the nearest one. It was an antique furniture store that not many shoppers went into. They dashed inside, closed the door, and hid underneath a windowsill, hoping not to be seen.
As they were huffing and puffing, Brook turned to Brax and asked, Do-do-do-do you see them?
Brax slowly peeked through the window trying not to reveal his bushy hair and saw Puke and Lil Dumps right outside looking for them.
Brax gulped and whispered, They’re right outside.
Suddenly, there was a loud sound and a thick cloud that seemed to come from nowhere. Poooooffffff!
Brax’s face turned green, and he stared at Brook with a disgusted look. Brook, did you just fart?
Embarrassed, Brook replied, Yes, that’s my Fart-of-Fear. I’m so scared right now.
Brax looked dizzy and said, No, that’s the Fart-of-Death.
Brax’s eyes rolled to the back of his head. He hit the floor like a tree that just got chopped down in the forest. He laid there passed out on the floor, and everything went dark.

the awakening
"W
ake up, child, wake up," said the man who owned the antique furniture store.
Brax was still out cold from the Fart-of-Death.
I can help him. Let’s bring him to the back,
the man said
