The Murder of Jessica Lang - Nicole Mims

    TEEN GIRL KILLER

    ––––––––

    GAIL BUCKLEY

Teenagers who commit serious crimes aren’t as widespread as many people like to think. Certainly, there’s the teenage impulse to fight against authority which may result in shoplifting, vandalism or trespassing. This is why, when teenagers commit particularly heinous crimes, the world is shocked by their violence. Males are much more likely to commit crimes of this nature than females - which, once more, makes crimes committed by teenage girls all the more surprising and awful to bear.

Rachael Mullenix rocked the Orange County community, and the entire nation, in 2006 when her crimes came to light. But what was it that drove Rachael to commit the crime that she did? What in her life lead Rachael down such a path of violence, blood, and destruction?

Born in 1989 in Oklahoma City, Rachael was the only child of Barbara and Bruce Mullenix. While she was their own biological child, she did grow up with her half-brother, named Alex. He was a child from Barbara’s previous marriage. Rachael grew up in a fairly normal household. She has a stable, normal childhood, perhaps up until the age of 10. It was around then that Rachael's parents began fighting. More importantly, they began fighting in front of her. The marriage was beginning to fall apart right in front of Rachael’s eyes.

The happy family fell to alcohol. First, Rachael’s father began drinking. This was soon followed by her mother. When Barbara met another person through an extramarital affair, it didn’t work out - and the devastation of the failed affair only caused her to drink more. When Rachael was around 13 years old, her parents finally divorced. This was, perhaps, the best thing for the couple. While Bruce Mullenix moved away to Corona for his work, Barbara moved with Rachel to Tampa, Florida.

While Barbara wasn’t the perfect mother, there were things in her life that had happened that may have affected her ability to raise her child in the best environment. At the age of eighteen, Barbara was assaulted and became pregnant. She carried her rapist’s child to term and put it up for adoption in an effort to give it a good home. Despite a previous marriage and the end of her second, from all that knew her, Barbara was trying her best.

The relationship between Barbara and Rachael was strained. It wasn’t exactly a healthy mother-daughter relationship. According to Rachael as she recalled her relationship with her mother, Barbara would become physical with her - scratching her and pulling her hair. There was one time in 2002 when Rachael had the police called on her mother after alleging being bitten by her. The neighbors at the time even observed what they described as a very apparent bite mark, in the shape of human teeth. For whatever reason, however, Rachael ended up recanting - whether it was because it never happened, or because Rachael didn’t want to invite more ire from her mother, one would never know.

When they lived in Tampa, a sheriff’s deputy was dispatched to respond to a 911 call from the townhome that the mother and daughter lived in. The call was in response to an aggravated assault. When he arrived, Barbara was hysterical and crying, and she wouldn’t cooperate with the deputy. To him, she seemed incredibly upset and nervous. The deputy also noticed that Barbara was injured, and while she remained, what the deputy called, uncooperative, he did manage to get out of her that it was Rachael who had attacked her. Despite that, when the deputy called, Rachael simply stated that she and her mother got into an argument and that she left the scene.

According to Rachael, however, Barbara would also make disparaging comments. She would tell her that she would never amount to anything. After the pair moved to Florida, Barbara quickly ran out of money that would support them. They couldn’t stay. When Bruce reached out to reconcile and have Rachael move with him back to California, Rachael agreed - but only if her mother would come with her. Despite their troubles, Rachael was still loyal to her mother. In 2005, the Rachael and Barbara moved back to California and began living with Bruce is his home in Huntington Beach.

Rachael insisted that, despite all of their arguments, she didn’t want her mother to be homeless, and that she loved her dearly. So, Bruce and Barbara, now divorced, were once more living together. Where some divorced couples become closer after divorcing, this wasn’t the case for Barbara and Bruce Mullenix. They continued fighting, and Barbara continued drinking. It was the drinking that caused Barbara to change into someone else, someone who was not a good mother. Rachael and her mother got along when she was sober, but Rachael tried to stay away from her mother as much as possible when she started drinking.

When Rachael was 17, she met Ian Allen in May of 2006. Ian was, at the time of meeting Rachael, 21. While they began dating, Rachael continued to stay close to her mother. They spent that summer closer than ever, even often getting jobs together as extras on movie sets. Barbara had intentions of living with Rachael after she turned eighteen. Through all of this, Rachael’s parents were beginning to accept her boyfriend, Ian. While Rachael was still a minor, their relationship was rocky with the authorities. It prompted Bruce and Barbara to even present Ian with a permission slip to show any authorities that questioned Ian and Rachael’s
