    Chapter 1

    Corban sat quietly at the dinner table as he stared blankly at his plate of food. His dad as usual sat at the head of the table, with his mother at the other end. The empty space across from him felt as if it could swallow him whole.

    You have no reason to blame yourself for what happened, his father said quietly.

    He heard him, but he didn’t respond; the morbid sense of sorrow that flooded him was suffocating him slowly.

    You’re a hero Corban, what you did to save those boys...

    Mother please, I’m no hero so just drop it, he said flatly but immediately recoiled at his cold reaction and reached for her hand, I just don’t want to talk about it okay?

    He had returned from war a hero in the public eye, having been awarded a gold medal for bravery had overshadowed everything else. The community in the small town where he lived was overwhelmed at his return, but deep down his own actions haunted him daily. It had been two weeks since he moved back into society, to try and pick up the broken pieces of his life and it felt like no-one had the slightest inclination as to how he really felt.

    After dinner he headed out, he needed space and his temporary home felt like a prison. Two more days then he would finally move into his own apartment down town and commence desk duty at the local military base. But even that was daunting. What he really wanted was to do what he spent his university year studying for. He wanted to be a teacher, like
