What Means the Most - Hazel Taylor
Chapter One
Morgan gripped the steering wheel tighter, fighting the tears that threatened to spill down her cheeks. She just couldn’t believe her Grandma Lizzy was gone. Turning up the radio, Mazzy Star choked the memories that crowded her mind.
Miles and road markers slipped past as she drove faster than the speed limit, hoping to kill the pain that squeezed her heart. Grandma Lizzy had been like a second mother to her growing up.
Grandma Lizzy had always been ready with a hug or kiss and a story to make her laugh whenever she needed it. Now that was all gone, washed away like the sand that gently returned to the sea that surrounded Anna Maria Island, Florida, her childhood home.
As the music blared on, she couldn’t help but recall her 12th birthday, rebellious and growing up way too fast. She had wanted an electric guitar just like the boy next door, Seth. Mom and dad had laughed at her frivolity. Even her sister, Trinity had thought she was odd.
Cade, her best friend in the whole world, hadn’t laughed. He confessed that he thought girls who played guitar like Lita Ford were hot. She had laughed at him as his eyes got that far off look and he grinned a crooked smile. She hadn’t known who Lita Ford was but if she had a guitar, she was going to find out.
When her birthday finally arrived, she had the usual dinner at Jodies Seafood Shack. A tiny, turquoise house with big windows that overlooked the water, it seemed to lean to the left, making her want to walk that way no matter where she was in the house.
She always loved watching the boats go by. Girls in way too little bathing suits, as her mother would say, swam and had fun. This birthday however, as she opened present after present from family and friends, she was disappointed over and over.
Purses, jewelry, makeup, movie tickets, a pottery making kit, you name it. Everyone had thought of everything except what she actually wanted.
Her Grandma was late, as always. In a flurry, she bustled in empty-handed. Morgan recalled how she enveloped her in her usual wafting scent of Elizabeth Taylor’s Diamonds and planted a ruby kiss on her cheek.
Morgan never minded; Grandma always seemed to carry stardust in her pockets. Nothing ever bothered her, and she could almost feel what you were thinking at any given moment. Looking down at Morgan, she saw right through her false smile to the root of the problem.
Cheer up cupcake,
she said. All will be well.
Morgan remembered the warm hug she received followed by a snap of the fingers that sent Cade running out the door.
Moments later, he returned with a huge box wrapped in pink, glittery paper, a satin, white bow atop. Looking up at grandma, she knew. Morgan ran to the box and tore at its wrap, which grandma thankfully hadn't taped in her usual fashion. Tears of joy fell from her cheeks as she clasped the purple electric guitar. Morgan screamed with joy and danced around the room, showing everyone the guitar. When she finally landed in front of her grandma, who had been smiling from ear to ear, she held onto her for what seemed like forever.
Her grandma, who was nothing
