    Chapter 1

    Leaving Home

    Dexter was playing outside his home high in the Swiss Alps. His home was a ledge, carved by wind and rain into the side of the mountain and hidden beneath an overhang of jagged rocks. He scratched the soil with his hooves and kicked small stones, watching them tumble down the mountainside. He waited for the mailman to arrive.

    Today was the day Dexter was dreading. The day he would find out if he would be sent away to boarding school. The idea of going to a boarding school far, far away was terrifying. It meant he would have to leave his home, his family and his friends.

    He heard a sound and saw Mr Billy, the mailman, making his way slowly up the trail.

    Oh no, thought Dexter. There must be a letter.

    Mr Billy was old and very wise. He delivered the mail and the news to all the Dahu families across the Alps. Mr Billy knew everyone and everything, so he was held in great esteem.

    ‘Morning, Dexter.’ He peered over his eyeglasses, nodding his head in greeting. ‘And how are you today?’ he asked, as his wispy, snow-white beard fluttered in the breeze.

    ‘Good morning, Mr Billy. I’m fine, thanks.’

    Dexter returned the nod and bowed by bending his longer left front leg. This is a Dahu tradition and a sign of respect for elders that little goats learn early in
