Former captain Bladen Read knows that Caroline Falkner wouldn't regard him as a suitable partner. He is, after all, illegitimate and she's a respectable widow. But a lot of her life is based on lies and a lot of what happens next is because of these lies and things will have to be solved before they both can have a happy ever after. It did a good job of dealing with disability and illegitimacy and the problems everyone can have when you have a society that is so tightlaced. There were moments when I was frustrated with the characters still it's an interesting read.
