    PREFACE

Colombia is a country full of myths and legends. Most villages and towns possess their own superstitions and spirits, some feared, others revered. One such spirit is Cuchavira, the god of the rainbow whom, legend has it, the Muisca people thanked with gifts once floods from the savannah rains had receded.

This story is set in a land named after Cuchavira. There are many fictional creatures, some good, some not so good! Rainbows feature throughout and Uncles Moonbow and Fogbow relate to real meteorological phenomena: Moonbows are rare lunar or night-time rainbows produced by light from the moon whilst fogbows are formed by cloud and fog droplets.

Although it is impossible to touch a rainbow, according to Irish folklore there is always a pot of gold at the end. I hope you find yours!

    THE LAND OF CUCHAVIRA

The mystical land of Cuchavira lies at the very edge of our world. Many creatures live there. Most are very happy and live quietly together - but, some do not!

There are the Flairies who live in the north and the Pixlies to the south. Elfins like to live near the water’s edge while the restless Implets are always on the move. At the very centre of the vast land, high on a hillside, live the Rainbow Sisters with their Uncle Moonbow. It is a lovely place to live, most of the time. In fact if it were not for one particular inhabitant, Cuchavira would be perfect. That creature goes by the name of Glib the Evil Globlin!

Today Glib stood with his hands on his hips looking very fierce, his black leather body armour glinting in the sun. His dark goggly eyes moved around the camp glaring at the other Globlins. The smaller ones, the Giblets, shrank back into the shadows afraid to catch his eye.

Cuchavira is our home. He began, his voice booming across the silent camp.

But for too long now we have had to share it with others. Creatures who are peace loving and worst of all….Glib paused for a moment as if he couldn’t bring himself to say the word. He swallowed…. happy.

    I HATE HAPPINESS!" he bellowed.

The Globlins nodded their heads in agreement.

But what can we do? asked a short chubby one huddled next to the fire.

We must come up with a plan to stamp-out happiness wherever it occurs replied Glib. I will not rest until everyone in this land is utterly miserable and that includes those awful Rainbow girls! He shook his head angrily.

And as for those dreadful Pixlies, he continued, so smug with all their glitter and gold! Always boasting about how good they are at finding things!

Don’t forget about the frightful Elfins! the chubby one piped up. Their Queen Alva thinks she’s so smart with all her healing powers!

I wish I had healing powers! Gus, the biggest Giblet whispered to the other Giblets who all nodded in agreement.

A small smirk appeared on Glib’s face.

Yes, we will make them all miserable! We must think of ways to make Cuchavira an awful place to live in!

For the next few hours, Glib and his evil Globlins plotted and planned. There were many suggestions of what they could do, most of which were just too silly. Globlins were not known for being very clever!

The Giblets ran gleefully around the huddled group, jumping up and down with excitement.

Can we help? asked Gus, the biggest Giblet, clapping his hands in glee. His long fluffy earflaps, which all the Giblets wore, bounced up and down on the side of his head. Giblets really wanted to be evil too. It was a great day when Giblets became Globlins and their brown leather armour was replaced by a black shiny one.

Can we, can we? Oh please, let us! Can we? Gus persisted. He ran around the small group desperate to be included.

    Glib had had enough.

Stop! he bellowed. You’re giving me a headache! Go and play somewhere else. This is serious business we are talking about!

Gus stopped jumping and his face fell. His bushy black eyebrows knotted together and he pouted his lips. He stormed off in a great huff with the other Giblets running after him into the forest.

Giblets can be helpful too you know! he exclaimed, stomping his feet as he marched along the path.

And just as evil as Globlins! he continued. We’ll show them. We’ll show them all!

    THE PIXLIES STORY

The Giblets followed Gus nervously until they came to the outskirts of a pretty village. The small houses dotted around the roots of a large oak tree were made from soft green moss. Around the edges were clusters of delicate flowers in many colours, their petals swaying gently in the breeze.

This was the home of the Pixlies.

Pixlies are happy little creatures that love to have fun and are especially fond of dancing. They are renowned for being good at finding things and are familiar with every inch of Cuchavira, all the caves and hidden corners on land and sea.

Globlins, and therefore Giblets, hated Pixlies!

Music filtered through the air and as Gus and the others crept nearer, they could see small figures all dressed in green laughing and dancing together. Their little pointed ears twitched as they danced and the shiny gold buttons on their tunics twinkled in the sunlight.

Pax was their leader and Gus could see him standing in the middle of the group clapping his hands in time to the music. On his head he wore a green pointed felt hat with a large jewel at the front. His son, Pop, stood proudly before him.

This is so much fun dad. Pop shouted trying to be heard over the loud music. I think I might join in the dancing.

Pax smiled at his son. On you go, it’s a little too fast for me.

As Gus watched, he got madder and madder. He could hear whoops and shrieks and lots of laughter and his blood began to boil. Before the Pixlies knew what was happening, Gus was running towards the camp, his Giblets behind him, ripping up flowers and knocking over anything that got in their way. They pulled at the delicate moss structures and kicked at the small wooden doors. They kept on running through the village and out the other side leaving terrible destruction behind them.

The Pixlies looked on in disbelief as their beautiful village was destroyed in seconds. Pax was horrified and near to tears.

What have they done to our lovely home! he cried. Something must be done about those wicked Giblets!

But what can we do? asked Pop. Every time we rebuild our homes they destroy them again. They just don’t care!

Pax nodded slowly, he knew his son was right. There was only one thing he could do, he would have to go and talk to Glib and beg him to keep his younger ones under control. Pax sighed, fearing it would be a waste of time but he would have to try anyway.

The Giblets raced back to their camp full of excitement and bravado. They were all so pleased with themselves. Glib and the Globlins had just finished their meeting, having decided on a plan. Glib looked up as the Giblets skipped towards them.

I hope you’ve been up to something evil! Glib glared at the Giblets, not trusting them for a moment. Gus put on his most angelic smile.

Of course. He replied. You would be very proud of us!

Mmm… Glib shook his head as Gus led the Giblets back into the woods, giggling as they ran, to see what other havoc they could wreak.

    THE FLAIRIES TALE

In the north of Cuchavira, in the opposite direction from where the Pixlies live, there is a small wood called Mongabay. This is the home of the Flairies. They too are peace-loving and therefore hated by the Globlins.

Glib and his evil Globlins crept silently towards the wood to hatch their wicked plan. They had decided to capture Fern, the Flairie princess. That would certainly cause a lot of misery. They could
