Chapter 1
Halloween
Jonathan glanced appreciatively in the mirror on his desk. His face was deathly pale, his eyes were red and there were small drops of blood at the corners of his mouth. He looked like a really creepy vampire. Perfect for Halloween.
Suddenly, Jonathan flinched. Something had pinched his left arm quite hard – the plastic vampire teeth, which only a moment ago had been lying on the desk half a metre away.
Cara! Stop it!
he cried, although there was no one else in the room with him.
A moment later, a green arm came through the wall beside him, and then a green head. Finally, an entire green girl jumped out of the wall onto his desk.
What do you think of my costume?
asked Cara. Today I'm a ghost girl.
Looks pretty realistic,
said Jonathan with a grin.
It was true. Cara was actually a 275-year-old ghost child (in two months she'd be 276) who lived with her ghost uncle, Somnus, in a neighbouring apartment. Today, on Halloween, she could walk around the way she really was for a change – a ghost with green skin and red hair. Most of the time she had to disguise herself. For example, when she went to school with Jonathan. Everyone thought she was a completely normal nine-year-old girl. Only Jonathan knew what she really was.
Now Cara could even wear her favourite dress. A white, moth-eaten princess dress.
At that moment, the bedroom door opened.
Hello, Cara,
said Jonathan’s mother.
Hello Mrs Bauer,
Cara replied cheerfully.
How did you get in here? I didn’t hear the doorbell,
she asked, astonished.
I opened the door for her,
Jonathan quickly fibbed.
Jonathan’s father poked his head into the room too.
You both look really scary,
he said. By the way, the distribution of costumes on Halloween is very interesting. If you spend ten minutes walking down a Berlin street after three o’clock on Halloween, the probability of meeting a vampire is at least seventy percent. For ghost girls, on the other hand, the probability is two percent at most.
Jonathan’s father worked as a mathematician for an insurance company and liked to calculate everything in life that he possibly could.
Do your teachers really have nothing against you going to their wedding in costume?
asked Jonathan’s mother.
They were getting ready to leave for the celebration. Jonathan’s mother was already wearing her best dress. The wine-red one that his father had brought back from a business trip in Italy.
No,
said Jonathan. We asked Mr Bierbacher and Ms Mettmann especially. They said we’re allowed to come in our Halloween costumes.
Anyway, it’s all Mr Bierbacher’s fault,
added Cara. He was the one who accidentally set the date of the wedding to be on Halloween.
Ms Mettmann was Cara and Jonathan’s class teacher, and Mr Bierbacher was their subject teacher for science and maths. The two of them had grown very close during a class trip to a haunted castle. So all the students who had been on the class trip, and their parents, were now invited to the wedding.
Hopefully it won’t be too chaotic – a wedding and a Halloween party,
said Jonathan’s mother.
I’m sure it won’t,
Jonathan reassured her, although he secretly hoped there would be at least little bit of chaos. It was Halloween after all.
By the way, I have another mathematical problem,
said Jonathan’s father, stepping into the room. Now they saw that his legs were bare and he was holding his suit trousers in his hand.
What’s the trouble?
asked his wife.
I just don’t understand it. I’ve only put on 3.75 kilograms since I bought this suit. Taking into account the stretch of the fabric, the probability is close to one hundred percent that I should still fit the trousers. But I can’t do up the button.
Then I suppose I’ll have to move the button for you,
said Jonathan’s mother, turning to go.
Thank you, dear,
said Jonathan’s father, leaving the room with his wife.
My Uncle Somnus won’t be coming to the party until a bit later,
Cara said to Jonathan once they were alone.
Why?
asked Jonathan. I thought your uncle liked parties.
He does,
replied Cara. But Uncle Somnus had an accident with a time lozenge.
He can’t come because of a lozenge?
asked Jonathan, surprised. Did he choke on it?
No, he mistook it for something else,
Cara explained. Uncle Somnus meant to take a cough drop last night because he had a sore throat. But he accidentally took one of the ghost lozenges meant for time travelling.
So, Uncle Somnus is living in another time now?
asked Jonathan incredulously.
Cara nodded. Fortunately not for long. The effect of the lozenges only lasts a short time. Uncle Somnus might even make it back before the ceremony.
Which era did he end up in?
asked Jonathan, who found this all very exciting.
No idea. You never know where you’re going to end up with those lozenges,
said Cara.
Chapter 2
Rings and a Knight
A good half hour later, Jonathan, his parents and Cara entered the large columned hall in Berlin’s Red Town Hall.
"The probability that we’ll get stuck in a traffic jam is
