About this ebook

What would you do if a spooky young woman is creeping out all your prospective buyers, spiriting them away? But her only sin is her determination to satisfy the spirit that's jerking her around. Her eerie looks make matters worse.

Big, beautiful, flaming red-haired Madeline, the ranch sales agent, was faced with Ruby, the spooky young woman. Ruby is going to cost Madeline her job if she doesn't get her removed. Here's what Madeline did…

She texted Joan, the rebel life coach, with 'HELP!'. 'Pack your mightiest ghost-busting gear and COME NOW!'

Joan, Jenny (Joan's sometimes sidekick who doesn't go anywhere without her six-shooter), and Patches (the rescued polka-dot chihuahua), high-tail it to Deming, New Mexico just in time. That is, just in time to sharpen their cloak-and-dagger skills, attempt to outsmart the political mob world, and be faced with Jenny's old nemesis once again.

Whose body is it this time? There's so many to choose from…

Can Joan and Jenny pull this one off? Or will the bad guys win? Or both?

If you like Nomadland, Jessica Fletcher, Columbo, and Hetty Wainthrop, you'll love Ruby, The Haunted -- this Joan Freed Life-Changing Mystery/Adventure.

Author

Alexie Linn

Alexie Linn was born and raised in the 'mild' Pacific Northwest -- where the snow drifts are never higher than the barn roofs.  Her first year of married life was lived in Alaska, in a tent and a homesteader's cabin -- where she got closely acquainted with sourdough and beans.  She escaped to the desert southwest, became a widow, and life then began. Alexie is a papered Life Coach, Nutritional Therapist, and Counselor with a vivid -- sometimes outrageous imagination. She's also a slave to Joan Freed, the rebel life coach who, somehow, manages to come out on top of her mysterious and chaotic adventures.

    Afterthoughts:

    Introduction:

Hi there. I’m Joan Freed. The rebel life coach and nutritional therapist that you may – or may not – have heard about. I work hard to keep a low profile for my own protection. Protection from a few box store coaches who wish I would stop giving clients what they need; help wherever they are and whenever they need it.

When I’m not saving myself or clients, I write this life-changing series of books to help others in their journey. That’s what I was doing at 3 AM. Writing.

But that’s neither here nor there. It’s only important that you know the following story could wind up in deep do-do for me, my often cohort Jenny Crawford (used to be a client), and the current client, Madeline (from The Vintage Trailer).

Chapter 1: How it all began

Igot the text at 3 AM. A usual time for me to be up writing. But Madeline? Not so much.

Madeline: ‘I give up! Please come and help.’

    Me: ‘What should I pack?’

    Madeline: ‘Your strongest ghost-busting gear’

    Me: ‘Where, exactly?’

Madeline: ‘Call me when you get to Deming, New Mexico’

    Me: ‘See ya tomorrow’

    Chapter 2: Ghostbusting it is...

AFTER MADELINE’S WAKE-up call, I had to quit writing. That is, figuring out how to stop the Jeep that was careening down the mountain with no brakes. And three of us in it! Assuring myself it would go no closer to the edge until I get back to it, I shifted gears from writing to packing. Madeline said my strongest ghost-busting gear, whatever that is.

My repertoire did not include ghost-busting experience. I reminded myself that’s what life-coaching is all about. Helping others figure out how to get over or around their current brick wall. Whatever it’s made of. Should I throw in an extra sheet so I can make like Casper, the friendly ghost?

I started with a list of to-dos to close my place down and on down the road in my new (to me) van with bare necessities. Stacking what I could in the doorway, I realized my stack was bigger than the van. A re-sort sent over half of the stack back into the cupboards.

This will be the maiden voyage in the van. I sold the Wilderness because I was tired of the hassle of a tag-along trailer. While I used to drag it, park it, and leave it there for the summer, I’m more spontaneous now. And still trying to be a ‘tourist’... Check-off my bucket list. Visit my people strung throughout the country; move daily or weekly.

But living in a van on the move is way different. This will be an adventure in so many ways.

By the time the sun peeked over the horizon, my doorway is jammed. But now I could see without a flashlight to load it all into my tiny new house on wheels. I could also snoop on Jenny to gauge when she and Patches, the polka-dot Chihuahua, were up and about. Will she be ghost-busting with me?

With the stack moved to clogging the van doorway, I heard Patches barking her greeting to the new day. I slid the door closed to block freeloaders, grabbed my coffee mug and tramped to Jenny’s vintage scotty.

You up? I have news. Patches welcomed me with ucky doggy kisses that I tolerate with a shiver, cooing, and a pet. I missed you, too. It’s been forever.

Yep. Come in. It sounded like she was talking through a yawn. I opened the door and stepped in, Sit. Do tell. Where we headed in the middle of winter?

I chuckled, Not north. And not so far away either. I got the frantic ‘help’ text from Madeline. She says to bring the strongest ghost-busting gear we have. I swallowed a drink of coffee. Does this mean you’re in for it?

She shrugged, "You bet. The one man I was interested in wasn’t the ‘one good man’ I thought he was. I have no unfinished landscaping jobs. Neither do I have any new ones coming up for a month, or so. Might as well ghost-bust with you.

But tell me. How many ghosts have you busted?"

I counted off on my fingers, That’s a relative question. Either gazillions or none, depending on how you look at it. Laughing, I said, I won’t know what we’re dealing with til we get there. I told her I’d see her tomorrow. That work for you?

Perfect. I only have to hook it up and button it up. I can help you get your place secured. We could leave this afternoon if you want.

I clapped my hands together, making Patches jump up and bark, Well then, let’s do it! We can stay at Catalina State Park and sneak through Tucson before the ‘10’ turns into a parking lot. Come when you’re ready.

Chapter 3: Load ‘em up! Head ‘em out...

WITH THE VAN STUFFED full in a disorganized heap, we pulled out at 2 PM. Swapping Picacho Peak State Park for Catalina put us ending our traveling day before 4 PM.

I will have lots of daylight to reset my tiny house the first time. Or, at least, get my bedroom organized. How many resets will I have to do to live efficiently? I guessed at least three by the time I crawled into my bedroll.

On the road at 2 AM, we sailed through Tucson. and stopped at the Rex Allen rest area for finger food breakfast from our respective totes. I wondered how many movies pretty boy Rex and his horse made. I also wondered how many times my sister, Delores, had seen them. She is the Rope Opera Queen. Soap operas are the norm, but not for sister Delores. She must have guns and horses and dust storms to unwind. Making a mental note to catch up with Delores and my niece. Mary Linn, I saluted the statue of Rex and his steed that gilds the rest area.

Deming, New Mexico is the first town after Lordsburg in southern New Mexico. It’s hi-desert. At the southern end of the Rocky Mountains. A gemstone collector’s paradise. Rockhound State Park is one of my bucket-list items to explore. But I was raised and programmed to tend to chores first, then indulge in the reward. I called Madeline.

You made great time! Did Jenny come with you?

Yes, she did. How do we find you?

She gave me directions. We filled our stores while we were in Deming before leaving town. We were only going about 10 miles out of town. Long term survival supplies are not required.

Madeline set us both up next to her antique Aristocrat. and gave us the two-bit tour of the place; a ranch development waiting for life to happen. We could see it all from the guest ramada at the front of the office. We could see it all because she’d had no sales. There were no cabins, houses, or campers to break the desert view. Only roadways, utility posts, and parcel markers. Until your eyes ran into a beat-up, oxidized Subaru with a ramshackle tent at the back of it.

She had no sales because people saw Ruby and were afraid, according to Madeline. She assured me I’d know more when we had a face-to-face. The oxidized car and ramshackle tent were nothing.

    Chapter 4: We’re heeerrree...

I STUDIED THE SUBARU and tent, searching for the infamous Ruby that was controlling so many lives. I spotted her. Even from a distance I could see that her priorities were not personal appearance. I saw a tall, thin blonde with long gnarly hair busy with a shovel.

Madeline belly laughed. her flaming red hair slapping into her mouth from the
