    The Investigation testimony by

    Detective Jerome Campbell

TO BE HONEST THIS IS probably the strangest and most complicated homocide investigation I’ve ever been involved in since I joined the department as a detective. I can say that now, sitting back and surveying all the evidence scattered on my desk.

The investigation was both time consuming and frustrating, throwing up many dead ends and false leads as we eventually closed in on the killer. But no one could have predicted how we would come to solve this case.

The case initially centred on a series of killings in the Boston metropolitan area, the victims were all homeless and that threw up a whole set of issues as many of them were very hard to identify, in fact some were never identified. Their bodies simply lay in the morgue in the hope that someone would come forward and claim them. That didn’t happen for all of them.

Mainly as a way of commanding respect, both in the house and towards those who we met on a day to day basis. It gave us kids a good handle on life and helped equip us with just enough nouse to navigate our way through the tricky years of adolescence and onto adulthood.

I wanted to be a cop, always wanted to be since I was a kid. My father was skeptical, he wanted me to get a trade like my brothers and sisters but he could see it was like a calling for me.

Obviously being a mildly religious family, my father got that and with his eventual blissing I enrolled with the Boston Police Academy and embarked on a career in the force. My mother supported me from the start, I knew she’d be proud when I graduated from the academy, and she was there, clapping her heart out.

It wasn’t easy, I can tell you. Sometimes you’d get picked on and pushed to breaking point but gradually as we swung into the
