Alternative To Divorce - Julius Kane
Chapter 1
This is why you needed space?
Charles stood motionless on the front porch of the home he was displaced from two months earlier. Who the hell is he, Shareese?
His flaring nostrils revealed intense anger.
Oh Charles, what are you doin' hea?
His wife's Louisiana accent made her sound almost playful.
Don't worry about that. I still own this house.
He stared angrily down at the man holding his wife's hand. I want to know what the hell is going on?
He balled up his fists. Charles had used an old hideaway key that was kept under a plant. He sneaked into the spacious four-bedroom home while his wife was away. He was anxious to know what she'd been up to since he'd been gone. He searched for telephone numbers of other men as well as clothes that could have been left behind by mistake. He even peeked in all the bathrooms to see if the toilet seats had been left up. He was anxious to confront her about the divorce papers; among other things. Charles was shocked to see her stroll up the walkway hand in hand with another man. He now realized his worst fear was staring him in the face. It's eight in the morning. You were out all night, huh!
He looked at her, then back at the stranger.
Now that ain't none of yo business,
she answered. Her breath reeked of liquor. The same expensive cognac he always bought her.
Hey, what's up man? I'm Eric.
The tall, bald- head man extended his hand. Diamond earrings sparkled in each ear. He was wearing a custom-made suit. Charles could tell because he wore them too.
But Charles didn't move or utter a word. He certainly wasn't about to shake hands.
Oh, don't be like that, sugar. Me and Eric is just good friend is all.
Shareese rubbed the well-dressed man's shoulder. She knew such a gesture would further irritate her estranged husband.
I need to talk to you,
Charles said sternly, grinding his teeth.
Shareese's lips curved into a drunken smirk. Well, you gone to need a microphone.
She fumbled around in her pocketbook. Says right here, on this here paper, you ain't suppose to be within 500 feet a- me.
She waved her copy of the restraining order in his face. He been stalkin' me,
she whispered to her new beau and smiled.
I'm not a goddamn stalker. I just needed to talk to her and she was being unreasonable.
He suddenly felt the need to explain. Look, I didn't drive all the way over here for none of your stuff.
Oh baby, you said you loved my stuff,
she giggled.
Shareese always had a way about her. A kind of low-budget flamboyance is how Charles described it. But this was too much. Charles began to feel flustered. He'd only seen his wife three times since they separated. And even then it was because he couldn't bear being away from her so long. Sometimes he drove by the house to see if her car was there. Other times, he'd hang out in places he knew she'd be; just to catch a glimpse of her.
It had been several weeks since he'd stormed out of their home in the middle of a heated argument. A situation that she'd instigated. Now that he thought about it, she probably started that argument to cover up for something she had done or was about to do. Charles moved to an upscale boarding house about 20 miles away just because Shareese said 'she needed space'. Then out of nowhere he was served with divorce papers. It was like a kick in the head; especially after all he'd done for her. He should've seen it coming. She'd become so distant and contrary over the past few months. He believed a little space could indeed be what they needed. But now judging from the way this guy was holding his wife's hand, a separation wasn't the answer.
I need to speak to my wife. Do you mind,
Charles huffed.
The tall stranger smiled and released Shareese's hand.
Eric, you got to excuse me?
She stepped onto the porch grabbing the wooden handrail to keep her balance.
Sure baby girl. Take your time.
Eric's deep voice was smooth and unfazed. He pulled two cigars from his breast pocket and offered one to Charles.
Charles crossed his arms in defiance. Nah, you keep it!
he grabbed his wife by the wrist. He'd never been in a fist fight before. The only fighting he'd ever done was in the boardroom. But his newfound jealousy was pushing him to lunge at Eric and claim what lawfully belonged to him; his wife.
Careful there now. Don't break the young lady's arm,
Eric smiled.
The strangers cool voice irritated Charles. And now he was telling him how to handle his own wife. Shareese gave a hand gesture to Eric, asking him not to push things.
Thanks for seeing me home. Lawd knows I... I won't in no shape to be drivin',
she giggled. Talk to ya later.
Alright then,
Eric nodded. He could read between the lines. She wanted him to leave. Nice to meet you, man.
He tried to keep things cordial. Both men stared unblinkingly at each other. Eric pulled a sleek, gold lighter from his pocket and lit his expensive cigar. The entire time he never took his eyes off Charles. He wanted Charles to see that he wasn't afraid or
