About this ebook
NiX
This must be the part where I'm meant to tell you about myself. It seems a little redundant to do this here. I've really said all I'm willing to say about the author inside The Book. Do they sincerely expect me- ME, of all creatures, to plaster my face where just anyone can see it? Penning The Book was dangerous enough without pinning my face to it. Not that I don't fully intend to announce myself in due time. This is simply neither the time nor the place for that kind of ego. Here, I'll leave you with another one of my paintings instead. I created this many years ago, as sort of a self portrait, back when things first began to change within me, before I'd really settled into myself. I was still practically one of you then. Simpler times. I suppose I ought to leave you to it. Run along now, you' ve got a tremendous amount of work ahead of you and our chatter isn't going to get it done any faster.

The Book - NiX
Part One: The Prophet
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. You all liked that line, as they knew you would, but the truth is more complicated than that. Just as Rome can’t be built in a day, neither can a universe. They thought that whittling down creation to something you could all understand would give you a sense of relief. No one could have known how unrecognizable things would become from the innocent way they began.
The way it all started was simply astounding. Although, things also developed rather slowly, in their way. Potential energy is a powerful thing, and none is more powerful than absolutely nothing doing absolutely nothing for eons longer than the human brain can fathom. There wasn’t even enough of anything to fairly say that there was nothing, for nothing is an absence of something and there wasn’t yet any something to be left without. Just a still, empty, void full of potential waiting to burst forth. Then, quite suddenly (of course, doing nothing since before the beginning of time makes anything seem sudden), without warning or any explanation to speak of, something came to be. And the something was Everything. It expanded in all directions. Not just in the obvious ways like larger and further, it grew into smaller and nearer pieces as well. It grew in ways that were both abstract and concrete. Planets grew continents. Oceans grew life. Life developed emotions. As humans, it’s only natural that you would want to know exactly how all of that came to be. Was it all a part of some larger plan? It’s undeniably impressive and complex, which steers most of you in the direction of intelligent design- but your concept of intelligent design has been awkwardly skewed to line up with human abilities and desires.
- The Universe... Or Something -
This is where the Bookwriters come in. We come around every couple of thousand years or so to help tidy up the mess you’ve all undoubtedly gotten yourselves into as… sort of a courtesy. And we do our best. We really try. It’s just difficult when you all spook so easily and twist things so readily. Not to mention everything about you is constantly evolving from your language to your cognitive abilities. Sometimes there are unforeseen problems. Of course, foresight is what all of this is really about. Most of the problems in our world can be attributed to people not knowing that they didn’t know. Something as innocuous as a misidentified word can (and did) cause war for centuries. That’s why we, the Bookwriters, have to iron things out from time to time. Inform you of where you went wrong in the past, guide you through your difficult future, a general heads up if you will. I’m basically here to unwarp a bit of your history for you and help catch you up to speed before you kill the better part of everything. I’d love to say that this conversation is a one time deal so I’d better get it right, but the truth is that we’ve had to do this periodically since the invention of fire, and I’d be very surprised if I were the one who finally got it to stick. I’ll go as slow as time will allow, but try to pay attention. This may take some time for you to wrap your head around, but I know you can do it. I know it for a fact. So it is written, so it shall be done and all that. As I was saying, I cannot stress to you the importance of these words, so read thoughtfully but do not dally. The Last Book nears its end.
Now that you know why I’m here I’m sure you have a lot of questions. This will be easiest to digest if you’re gentle with yourself. Be patient, take breaks when you need to. There is a certain balance to things in this world. While the information I intend to provide you with may cause you discomfort at times, understand that this is a pruning. With every fractured piece of information we remove from your brain, we repair humanity, as a whole, just a little bit more. I’m proud of you just for trying. Remember too that I am with you now, as I have always been. We Bookwriters are very empathic, and I will share in your joy and your sorrows as you journey through this book as I have as you have journeyed through life. We’re in this together now. That was settled from the moment you decided to pick up this book. Your chapter, whatever you should choose to do next, is just as important as the rest of the book- none of this works without you. There are over seven billion people on this planet, each one a beautifully complex narrative in and of themselves. We do not believe in excluding people any more than we believe in banning books. Your story will be safe here with us.
On the subject of your story, perhaps it’s time I tell it to you. As I said earlier, In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth
. Like most sentences in The Last Book, you’re reading that one wrong. On the bright side everyone else read it wrong too, so there’s really no need to feel bad about it. Created is the wrong word. It should sound something more like, God made up
the heavens and the earth. Perhaps the least confusing way to put it would be, existed as. In the beginning, God existed as the heavens and the earth. Then there was light and water, birds and what have you, and God made up/existed as those things as well. As life began to gather across the planet, God grew. With each new atom, each previously nonexistent element to form, God grew and grew and grew and grew. Eventually life evolved into humanity, and thus humanity was a part of God as well. You see, humans were never made in
God’s image, you’re a part of the image, a piece of a whole. Nearly all of you have forgotten that by now. Not that it’s really your fault. Humanity forgetting practically every piece of valuable information it has ever known is hardly an accident. The
