The Hartford sisters were trying to suppress their excitement as they helped their mother and the cook prepare for their evening meal with Samantha, William, and the mysterious Reuben Dudley. The house—usually lively in all respects—was unusually frenzied as the girls shot up and down the stairs, changing outfits, redoing hair, and exclaiming, Is that the time already?
The Hartfords had evening supper guests and afternoon tea guests and Sunday morning breakfast guests frequently enough, so why was this visit causing such a flurry of anticipation?
If your sister and her husband were bringing to supper a young, unattached man of good employment, you might find yourself a little anxious as well. While the sisters were used to encountering society at the coast, it was rare for society to come to Tree Town. (Though one man could hardly be called society.

Reuben Dudley was also causing a flurry of excitement throughout Tree Town. Upon his arrival, Samantha immediately cursed herself for not having the forethought of putting Reuben up at her family’s home. It was much larger, it would have given Reuben more time with her sisters, and it was far away from the prying eyes of the town.
