Fall in Love with God's Word [WORKBOOK] - Brittany Ann
Introduction
Several months ago, while writing the manuscript for Fall in Love with God’s Word, I made God a promise: I would read my Bible every single day for a year.
I was already reading my Bible fairly regularly at the time, but I wanted to do more. I didn’t want to merely skim a chapter quickly so I could rush off to my next task. I didn’t want to spend my time in God’s Word completely distracted by my children fighting in the next room. I didn’t want to settle for a quick, surface-level reading when I know God’s Word offers so much more.
Rather, I wanted to immerse myself in God’s Word until it transformed my life, my priorities, and my attitude. I wanted to know God and see Him at work like never before. I wanted to hear His voice, receive His strength, and follow His call.
And I knew that—in order for me to be the person I want to be, have the relationship with God I want to have, and make the impact I want to make in this world—I had to make daily Bible study a non-negotiable part of my daily routine.
So I did. I read my Bible perfectly every single day. Until… I didn’t.
I don’t remember exactly how long it took for me to fall off the wagon, but my perfect reading streak was embarrassingly short-lived. One day I was doing great. Two days later I realized, Oh shoot! I completely forgot to read my Bible yesterday!
At first, I felt guilty. I had made a promise to God, and I broke it! I didn’t even have a good excuse. Daily Bible reading really isn’t that difficult, and I wasn’t particularly busy the day before. (I certainly wasn’t off curing cancer or solving world hunger.)
I was perfectly capable of keeping my promise. And yet, I simply forgot.
Has this ever happened to you?
You want to read God’s Word. You know it’s important. So you decide you’re going to start reading your Bible more regularly. And you do… for a while. But then life happens, and you don’t follow through as planned. Now you feel guilty. You might even feel like a failure (even though you’re not).
If you can relate to this, you’re certainly not alone. I literally wrote the book on how to fall in love with God’s Word, and I still have days when I struggle to read my Bible like I should. We all have days like this. It’s normal. But that doesn’t mean we can’t do something about it.
When I realized I had fallen off track, I had a choice to make. I could tell myself, This is too hard. I can’t do this. I might as well just quit.
Or I could ask myself two questions:
What went wrong?
What one small tweak can I make so reading my Bible is easier or more enjoyable?
Of course, I didn’t quit. I asked myself these two questions, and once I did, the answer was clear. Since my schedule had changed over the summer, I hadn’t created a new quiet time plan. I forgot to read my Bible because it wasn’t a part of my daily routine and I didn’t have any visual cues to help me remember.
One small tweak was all I needed to get right back on track, and I’ve continued to make small tweaks as needed ever since.
Now, it’s your turn. Do you know the specific reason(s) you don’t always read your Bible as often as you’d like? Do you know which small action(s) would make consistent Bible reading so much easier or more enjoyable for you?
In Fall in Love with God’s Word: Practical Strategies for Busy Women, I share a wealth of information, encouragement, and ideas, all designed to help you create a consistent quiet time, fall in love with God’s Word, and use it to change your life. If you haven’t grabbed your copy yet, you’ll want to start there.
But you and I both know that simply knowing what to do isn’t enough. Otherwise, we’d never argue with our husbands, eat way too much junk food, spend too much money at Target, or stay up way too late binge-watching Netflix—all things we know
aren’t good for us (yet we still do them anyway).
No, once we know what to do, we also need to know how to put this knowledge to work in real life. We don’t need to know what everyone else is doing. We need to find the strategies that truly work for us. That’s where this workbook comes in.
