FOREWORD
Our story takes place in Arizona during the years 1898 and 1899.
Many true stories from the Wild West have been already told. Yet, this one is something of a legend, the legend of the man called John Zero, who - like the Phoenix - rose from the ashes.
The legend has it, that he had brought justice to the slaves. He had freed them all from
Jack Mordor, tyrannical owner of the gold mines and governor of HellBerg city.
Let’s hear the stories of the legendary John Zero, who lost his memory to find his salvation.
Our story takes place during the troubled times of the battle for Arizona against Spaniards to put another star onto the flag, when Indians were turned into drunks by immigrant predators stealing their land, yet another legend rise up from the dust! While the Spaniards had Zorro, the Hopi Indians had Zero who became their final tribal leader and took their vengeance.
Well it’s just a legend, but behind every legend is a kernel of truth…
Dear reader,
You’re in control…
Come one!
Come all!
Come in and buck the tiger…
CHAPTER 1
- - BUCKING THE TIGER - -
Come one! Come all! Come in and BUCK THE TIGER.
It’s evening and it’s still damn hot outside on the streets of Phoenix, Arizona.
So we’d best go in one of the saloons and sip a cold lemonade or beer.
However don’t expect much in the way of inviting temperatures inside…
The saloon is packed with people and the heavy blueish smoke of the cigars swirl lazily in the stuff air.
A piano sits in the corner abandoned and silent.
The barkeeper is swamped.
The Faro table is situated in the middle of all the many others.

Seven players sit there at the table: knuckle-duster Dark Horse, Captain Jerry Jones, magician Merlin, vampire Lady Raval with her cat Oscar, The Dealer, and The Guy who Counts the Cards.
Let’s get a bit acquainted with the dramatis personae
so to speak:
DARK HORSE is a Mexican/Spaniard leader of Mordor’s infamous Knuckle-Dusters. He wears a black outfit and even his face is dark like night behind massive black moustache and beard. Even his eyes are like coal. He wears black leather gloves with a gold Knuckle-Duster singnet ring with Mordor’s green eye made of emerald. He wears a bicorne hat, like Napoleon, emblazoned with a Death’s Head. In front of the saloon his black horse silently awaits his return. Dark Horse moves real quiet, like a shadow, like the death. He rarely talks and when he does, it’s short and sweet. Like the bullet that follows his words…
He loves eating olives, beautiful women, gambling, and killing.
JERRY JONES is a captain in the famous 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry Regiment known as the Rough Riders. He’s honourable and courageous, a family man having a wife and two small boys back in Phoenix, and he loves gambling. Both at the Faro table and in life. He’s in his mid-40’s and wears a well-groomed moustache. Jerry is very brave and frequently takes risks. A few years back he was a sheriff in Yavapai county and the mayor of Prescott - both in Arizona. He always carries a black notepad, pencils, and a sharp knife - he began his career as a journalist for magazines. He’s accustomed to keeping a record of the events of the day. He likes to eat tons of watermelons and dreams about establishing a watermelon plantation down in Mexico and live out his days peacefully with his family.
PLEAN is a magician, a Spaniard, in his late 60’s, and very thin with a lot of vitality. He can run swift; even outrunning the youngsters much to their amazement. He wears a red coat and a tall conical wizard hat on his salt & pepper haired head. He’s got a long beard, like magicians do. He always carries a big brown suitcase, where he hides his magical implements to entertain audiences all over Arizona.
His assistant is a young, beautiful, and tough girl called Lady Raval, who is accompanied by her beloved cat Oscar.
She comes from North Africa, from the Berber tribes.
Nobody knows it but she has a passion for blood, Human blood…
It’s not that she’s a killer, but when she sees blood, she feels a kind of excitement she can’t describe, justify, nor understand…
OSCAR, like most cats, loves fish. Sardines especially in his case. Oscar is silent and lethal - all the mice within range are aware of his hunting prowess.
He’s a brave cat and can punch well above his weight.

DEALER is fat and sweat is running down his porcine face.
THE GUY WHO COUNTS THE CARDS is this with a chin as red as a ripe tomato.
So, let’s play!
Jerry Jones puts all his chips onto the card.
The dealer smirks and makes a warning gesture with his left palm. This gesture is addressed to Jerry.
JERRY JONES
I’ve been lucky with women, I’ve been lucky in fights and I’ve been lucky with cards…
DEALER
Really?
JERRY JONES
It’ll come, I’m damn sure!
LADY RAVAL
How can you be so sure?
Jerry Jones picks up a bottle of whisky and calls the barman to bring the glasses for the others around the table.
Jerry Jones serves the drink to Lady Raval too with a Casanova smile.
JERRY JONES
If you want something bad enough,
You’ll get it!
Jerry Jones downs his drink and then wipes his moustache.
LADY RAVAL
What is you want to win so badly?
JERRY JONES
If my card arrives and it will, I swear!
…
Will you kiss me?
LADY RAVAL
Sure!
For half of your fortune though!

Everybody at the table laughs and the cat opens his mouth wide revealing his sharp deadly fangs.
JERRY JONES
Where are you from, beautiful lady?
LADY RAVAL
From Barcelona, Spain but
my ancestors are from The Berbers tribe who stroll
the endless Saharan dunes…
Jerry Jones smiles and his eyes get slightly wet as he reflects upon the forgotten romantic dreams that took place so long ago in the courtyards of oriental palaces…
JERRY JONES
I would love to go there…
…
With you…
LADY RAVAL
Well, then let’s see what card our dear dealer pulls…
Dark Rider’s face is cast in the shadow of his bicorne hat,
only his black, deathly eyes shimmer from his hairy sun burnt face.
He picks up his glass and raises it slightly in Jerry’s direction. A gesture of both gratitude and to wish the brave gambler’s luck, but he doesn’t smile.
He has ominous aura about him, akin to the Grim Reaper making his way to Jerry’s door…
The magician Plean mumbles something in Spanish under his breath and does some strange finger signs with both his hands and his gaze falls onto the mechanical counting machine before The Man Who Counts the Cards.
The cat Oscar jumps onto the table and walks towards the dealer with a loud: Meow!
While the eyes of all players turn briefly towards the cat…
…the magician glances at the card counter machine and…
…one of the balls move…

The dealer pulls the card.
DEALER
Here we go!
He flips it over.
MAGICIAN
Oh! No!
Magician Plean sighs from pain and Jerry Jones remains
