Alfie's Adventures in Ancient Rome - Andrew Powell-Thomas
CHAPTER I
Alfie waited patiently at the school gates. The air was crisp, and it was another twenty minutes until their rusty hinges creaked open, but he didn’t mind standing around, he was far too excited.
For some children the thought of heading back to school was one of fear and dread, but for Alfie, it was his favourite time of the year: the beginning of a new term and a brand new topic for him to discover. He tapped his foot and glanced at his watch. What would it be? Last time it was all about wild animals in foreign lands and the time before that they discovered how the water cycle worked. Amazing to think that there’s always the same amount of water in the world - it’s just in different places and states. Maybe it would be about someone famous. Maybe. But what he really hoped for, more than anything else, was something to do with history. Some children love sport, others prefer building things with blocks, and, whilst Alfie enjoyed doing both of these, what thrilled him more than anything else was finding out about mysterious ancient lands; incredible buildings that are thousands of years old; great kings, queens and emperors… and for the next few minutes he stared into the distance, day dreaming.
Eventually, the gates squeaked open and the playground slowly began filling up with children and their parents. Babies cried in their prams and a football was being kicked against the fence as Alfie quietly ambled across the tarmac and peered eagerly into his classroom window. Pressing his face right up against the cold glass, he squinted to try and get a better view of what was inside.
Morning Alfie,
came a voice from behind him. Not trying to get a sneaky peak at our new topic display are you?
He didn’t need to turn his head to know who had spoken; it was Miss Chambers, his teacher. She always made amazing topic displays in her classroom that Alfie would spend hours looking at.
