Chapter 1: Principles of Project Management
Basic Information
Today, managers often find themselves working on projects that need to be handled with formalized methodology. This is because the technological advances that are related to businesses demand a change in organizational structures and processes. For a company to survive and prosper in its respective industry, its management and employees should be able to execute projects effectively and efficiently.
As a project manager, you must be knowledgeable about the basic terms and ideas associated with this field. This will allow you to communicate with the people you are working with and achieve your goals for your projects. But before we discuss project management, let's define project
first.
"A project is an endeavor in which human, material and financial resources are used to create a unique result, product or service."
Many companies and organizations have their own definition for this word, which can be quite confusing for beginners. That's why the ability to identify tasks that constitute a project can help you apply proper management.
Projects have three fundamental characteristics, which are:
• The goal is to create something of value.
• They have different phases, namely: start point, middle point, and end point.
• They will be considered complete once the end point is reached.
Remember these characteristics as they will help you identify projects.
Different Project Sizes
Projects come in different sizes. Small projects can be organized and handled by a few people while larger projects may require a big number of people and a dedicated group to manage the activities. As a project manager, you should
