Sandra Murphy

Sandra Murphy lives in St Louis with Ozzie the Westie impersonator dog and Louie the tuxedo cat who pretends he's James Bond. Both have learned to keep a low profile when Sandra is talking to her imaginary friends. Ozzie and Louie make her stories better with their astute comments and eye rolls. Sandra also writes magazine articles, edits a newsletter, and may someday write a book. If not a respectable job, at least it keeps her off the streets and out of the bars.

    Preface

God speaks to us, even today, in many ways. Anyone who wants to live, to be encouraged, and to grow in any area of their life will enjoy reading "Truly God Is My Source". You see it is my belief that many of our modern-day self-improvement philosophies may actually be found in God’s word.

Truly, God Is My Source is based on Isaiah 40:30-31 Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion. But those who trust in the LORD will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint. (NLT)

    Isaiah 40:30-31

Scriptures in this book speaks of love, hope, peace, joy, and strength. These scriptures were selected to encourage the reader to trust in God’ strength to soar above life’s trials. You will also find in this book a collection of inspirational affirmations, and simple prayers sent out initially via text messages to my millennial sons as words of encouragement. After sharing the messages with other family members and friends, I soon realized that these messages appealed to those of all ages, beliefs, and different walks of life.

The affirmations and prayers that accompany the scriptures are written in the first person, so that they may be more relatable the reader. Scriptures, from Genesis to Revelation will provide you a refreshing look at God’s word.

You are invited to embrace the scriptures and write your own affirmations and prayers. I hope you share the scriptures with family and friends. I know that my family and friends are glad that I did

    GROWING IN THE FAITH

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.

    —2 Peter 1:5–7 (NIV)

Affirmation/Prayer: I will never achieve perfection when it comes to trusting and serving God. Each day I will add a little to my faith to help me grow mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Effort, not perfection, is the key to my being faithful. Thank you, Lord, for your spirit that gives me love, knowledge, self-control, hope, courage, and perseverance. Help me to continue to grow in the faith.

    God is my source!

    FEELINGS

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.

    —John 16:33 (NIV)

Affirmation/Prayer: To think I will live a life free from trouble is living in an unrealistic world. When trouble comes, feelings of fear, sadness, loneliness, hurt, or anger may overtake me if I give in to these feelings. Thank you, Jesus, that in you, I have another choice. I can experience feelings of courage, strength, love, joy, and peace in spite of my troubles. Now I will let He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world 1 John 4:4 (NKJV)" be the ultimate guide to how I think or feel.

    God is my source!

    January 3

    FIGHT OR FLIGHT

But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.

    —2 Timothy 3:1–5 (ESV)

Put everything to the test. Accept what is good and don’t have anything to do with evil.

    —1 Thessalonians 5:21–22 (CEV)

Affirmation/Prayer: Lord, may I always be aware of my own weaknesses. Help me to set healthy boundaries avoid people and places that are not good for me or my walk with you. In doing so may I remember to love everyone as you have loved me.

    God is my source!

    January 4

    HOPE, PATIENCE, AND PRAYER

Let your hope make you glad. Be patient in time of trouble and never stop praying.

    —Romans 12:12 (CEV)

Affirmation/prayer: All I need to succeed today are hope, patience, and prayer. Hope fills my heart with expectations and trust in God. Patience helps me wait on God and tolerate others as well as tolerate unexpected delays. Prayer helps me relax and give everything to God. I will let hope, patience, and prayer dictate how I deal with people and circumstances outside of myself.

    God is my source!

    January 5

    ANXIETY

When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.

    —Psalms 94:19 (NIV)

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

    —Philippians 4:6–7 (NIV)

Affirmation/prayer: Anxiety is great within me when I try to predict what will happen in the future. The worry and restlessness I feel are the results of my always anticipating the worst-case scenario. This is the result of my wanting to be in control. Lord, instead of holding on to thoughts that only lead to fear and doubt, I will put my future in your hands through prayer and meditation.

Thank you for your gift of peace that passes all understanding.

    God is my source!

    THE LIGHT

Jesus told us God is light and doesn’t have any darkness in him. Now we are telling you. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.

    —1 John 1:5–7 (NIV)

Affirmation/prayer: To walk in darkness or the light of God is my choice. When I walk in the heavenly light, God is my companion and my guide. God is the light that guides me away from darkness. Following the light helps me see the lies that I tell myself when it comes to my relationship with God, myself, and others. As I walk closer to God, the darkness of my past is left behind. In his light I feel warmth, joy, serenity, and peace. Thanking Jesus for his grace that allows me to walk in the light.

    God is my source!

    FOLLOWING GOOD ADVICE

How happy is the man who does not follow the advice of the wicked or take the path of sinners or join a group of mockers! Instead, his delight is in the LORD’s instruction, and he meditates on it day and night. He is like a tree planted beside streams of water that bears its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.

    —Psalms 1:1–3 (HCSB)

Affirmation/prayer: There are times and situations when the right path to take may not be so obvious. Thank you, God, for your words of wisdom that teach me how to live. When I am in doubt, Lord, give me the patience to pray and meditate on your instructions. Strength and blessings come
