It was October 22, 1859, six days after his raid on Harpers Ferry, and John Brown, the abolitionist, stirred uncomfortably on his cot in the jail in Charlestown, Virginia. He rubbed his bleary eyes and tried to clear the fog in his brain as he struggled to remember the events that brought him to this Godforsaken place.
Brown ached all over as his wounds begged for relief. There were three stab wounds in his body, and a slash across his chest. Maybe it would help to clear his head and put things in order if he could just start from the beginning. Then he could begin to figure a way out of this awful mess in which he had gotten himself and others.

He was born on May 9, 1800, to Owen and Ruth Brown in Torrington, Connecticut.
When he was five years old, his father moved his family to Ohio, where his dad operated a tannery.
The 59-year-old man remembered that his father, Owen, brought his family up under the precepts of the Congregational Church, which had members who often spoke out on the need for human rights for all people.
