Saffron Grant

Over the last 20 years Saffron Grant has experienced the construction industry from a range of perspectives working for designers, Clients, Contractors and as a business owner and trainer. After graduating from Coventry University in 1999 with a BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering with Industrial Training Placement, Saffron started her career with Glasgow City Council Land Services before moving into a design role in the private sector. Whilst working for the bridges team with Bullen Consultants, (now part of Aecom), she gained experience in bridge inspections and assessment, structural steel and reinforced concrete design. She went on to work as a Site Engineer for Costain on the construction of a new water treatment works for the Manchester ring main. She then worked for JMP Consulting, (now part of Systra Group), in a Design, Project Management and Site Supervision role within the highways team. She worked as a freelance Site Engineer before setting up her own construction training business specialising in setting out courses. From the start of her career she was committed to promoting Civil Engineering as a career to young people as well as being actively involved with professional bodies. In 2001, she was part of a team of three graduate engineers to win the Henry Palmer Award, a nationwide competition run by the ICE to design a scheme to attract young people into a career in Civil Engineering. She also spent some time as the publicity secretary for the ICE Glasgow and West of Scotland Graduates and Students Committee. Since setting up her own training business 10 years ago, Saffron has been focused on raising the standards of site and setting out engineers. She is an Associate Lecturer at Glasgow Caledonian University and an Approved Trainer for the CITB. She has delivered Engineering Surveying modules to FE colleges and has trained colleges and university lecturers to enable them to deliver the modules themselves. She has worked with colleges and universities to help them review the content of their surveying modules to make them relevant and employer-focused. She is currently working on behalf of the Scottish Civils Training Group to carry out research into the employability and skills of Scottish construction industry graduates, and is representing a group of Scottish Contractors in the review of the SQA Engineering Surveying modules at HNC and HND level. In her endeavours to reach as many people as possible with essential information about setting out, she developed an online course containing step-by-step videos on different setting out activities, which now has over 600 students enrolled. Saffron is an INLPTA certified NLP Master Practitioner and uses these skills in every aspect of her technical training and business, including executive coaching and the personal and professional development courses that she runs.
