Chapter 1 – The Early Life of the Accidental Queen
From the moment she was born, Elizabeth’s life was a troubled one.
Her father, Henry VIII, changed the course of England’s history so that he could marry Anne Boleyn, hoping that this second marriage could produce a healthy and strong son, something he could not accomplish with Catherine of Aragon.
On September 7, 1533, Anne Boleyn gave birth to a princess named Elizabeth in Greenwich Palace. While Anne did eventually conceive a son, he was but a stillborn.
Henry VIII, by this point, began to grow weary of Anne and started to scheme her end. Historians agree that while his charges of Anne on adultery and incest were not true, it was all he needed to sign her warrant for execution.
Anne Boleyn was executed through beheading on May 19, 1536, at Tower Green, before Elizabeth was even three years old.
Following Anne’s execution, Henry was married and was awaiting the son that Jane Seymour, his third wife, was carrying.
Jane Seymour, the Queen of England from 1536 to 1537, died shortly after the labor of her son Edward, who would become the future Edward VI.
Henry eventually married his sixth wife, Catherine Parr, who was Elizabeth’s last stepmother. Catherine was to be the one who would restore Elizabeth and Mary, Elizabeth’s stepsister, to Henry’s court and into the line of succession. In 1547, when Henry VIII died, Catherine Parr married her final husband, Thomas Seymour.
Elizabeth and Queen Dowager Catherine had a good and close relationship but Elizabeth was sent away to live in Sir Anthony Denny’s household in Cheshunt in May of 1548. Elizabeth was never to see her stepmother again.
The reasons as to why she was sent away were in part due to a possible scandal between Elizabeth and Thomas, Catherine Parr’s then-husband. Apparently, Catherine found the two in an embrace. It has also been said that Elizabeth suffered emotional crisis due to Seymour’s inappropriate sexual misconduct toward her. At this time, Catherine was also pregnant, which was a surprise. She gave birth to Mary, but died not too long afterward. She was buried in Sudeley Castle, making Thomas Seymour a suitable bachelor once more.
It is said that Catherine Parr’s actions as regent, combined with her strength of character and noted
