    When it was announced in 1947 that the young Princess Elizabeth was to be married, her choice immediately stirred controversy.

    Her husband-to-be was Prince Philip, a Corfu-born, German-descended heir to the thrones of Denmark and Greece – part of an exiled royal family lacking the lands and money other suitors boasted.

    What’s more, he had a reputation as a dashing British Navy officer of strong character, more used to taking command than standing in the shadows.
