Chapter 1: Akron

While Cincinnati and Cleveland are the cities which spring to mind when one first mentions Ohio, the city of Akron is also full of promise. It has been known as the City of Invention as well as the Rubber Capital of the World, as Akron has thrived economically in many areas. While it is known as a city that houses entrepreneurs, it is also noted for being the birthplace of many great American athletes. Perhaps the most prominent of these athletes, is the living legend of the National Basketball Association, LeBron James.

Akron is a marvel of a city, however it is not without its darker shades. Many neighborhoods within the city were of ill repute, and the city has been known for its underbelly of methamphetamine addiction. Living among the squalor of Akron, sixteen-year-old Gloria Marie James became a mother on December 30, 1984. As if having a child at a tender age was not enough of a challenge, the father of the newborn baby, Anthony McClelland couldn't care less about the responsibilities of fatherhood. Anthony had a long criminal record and the birth of his son did nothing to rehabilitate him. He cut whatever ties he had with Gloria and the child would never know his father. One would scarcely imagine that the baby LeBron, being born and raised in the bleakest of circumstances and inheriting nothing from his father, would one day be referred to as ‘King James.’

Your home is where you lay your hat, as the saying goes and this was perhaps never truer than during the childhood years of LeBron James. Gloria and LeBron would move house and live in several neighborhoods throughout Akron, as Gloria was in a constant struggle to find steady work to support her and LeBron. In addition to the many jobs she held, her biggest challenge lay in protecting her son from the horrors that Akron had to offer. While one section of the city was home to ambitious entrepreneurs, the reality that Gloria and LeBron lived in had a different mindset.
