CHAPTER 1
The Questidon Raises His Head
Blagdon. Even the name was fitting. It was a dismal and damp valley that offered little or no hope of escape, for there was a high, precipitating wall all around it. This wall consisted of rain which was very dense and fell with great force continually. Upon seeing the wall, one would think it would have flooded the whole valley long ago, but most of the rain ran fiercely down into a deep narrow trench and some mysteriously evaporated away. Unfortunately, the rain that did not run into the trench or vanish was making the valley muddier with each passing year. There was talk of an eventual flood that would destroy them all, the all being the Eldens in particular. The Eldens were small, fragile creatures, the tallest of them all being only three feet in stature. They all shared the same plight and had equal opportunity to find the truth regardless of the conditions of which they were born into. Our story is about one Elden in particular, named Trig Varyl. He had slightly oversized ears and large, dark, glossy eyes that appeared too big for his head. This seemed an odd thing, as he didn’t have the clearest of vision and was quite dull of hearing, but such was the lot of all of the Eldens in Blagdon.
There were other creatures that lived in Blagdon. The Arvads, for instance, were odd-looking creatures with seemingly no definite form to them at all. They were gray, misty, cloud-like creatures that could float, vanish, or appear at will, which gave them a great advantage over the Eldens. They hovered over the Eldens and untiringly made small talk and chatter over their heads. They told them how lovely Blagdon was and how happy they were, even though both Arvad and Elden alike knew the Eldens were not happy and Blagdon was far from lovely. However, Blagdon was all the Eldens had ever known, and it was supposed that it was all there ever had been.
Trig had two friends that he had met long ago. There was Adorabelle. She was charming and beautiful—for an Elden, that is. She had long, straight, ivory hair that swept the ground as she walked, thus causing it to be in need of continual washing. Then there was Slade, Trig’s very best friend. He was a bouncy sort of Elden with curly, wild-looking hair. He was chipper and playful and didn’t like to take things too seriously. He was forever loyal and could almost always make Trig smile. But even Slade was finding it more and more difficult to amuse Trig. Trig was becoming distant, always dreaming of a better way of life, something brighter and yielding more freedom. Trig dwelt on these thoughts continually, eventually making his life troublesome. His life was quickly becoming confusing and restless. Finally, after many months of unrest, he decided that if there was something better, he was going to find it, regardless of what others said or how long it would take. He thought for some time about the best way to tell his two friends. Not coming up with anything satisfactory, he decided just to say it straightforwardly.
Now, it came upon a certain day that Slade and Adorabelle were visiting Trig. They were chattering about some such nonsense when Trig boldly interrupted.
I am going to take a journey,
he blurted out. I am going to leave Blagdon!
They stopped chattering and looked up at Trig crossly.
A journey?
asked Slade, not realizing what ever Trig could possibly mean.
How ridiculous!
added Adorabelle, with her usual arrogant demeanor, making Trig feel rather foolish momentarily.
She shook her head. Where can you journey to in Blagdon?
she asked angrily.
Trig, trying to maintain enthusiasm, replied, "No, I said a journey out of Blagdon."
Adorabelle sneered as she continued, How do you think of these sorts of things? It’s ridiculous, are you going to try and leave everything you have here? Not to mention, most of all, me.
No,
Trig said, you don’t understand, I was hoping you would both come with me.
Oh, no,
said Slade, shaking his head rapidly. Why would I want to risk my life doing something stupid like that?
Meanwhile, Adorabelle’s expression of annoyance had turned to one of heated anger.
She walked over to the door and turned around to face Trig. Apparently, you didn’t hear me. I said, if you left Blagdon, you would have to leave me!
Besides
she added, it isn’t possible anyway.
She turned, went out the door, and slammed it behind her. Slade watched Trig’s cover as he watched through the window as she walked away. A cover is what we humans call a face and much could be known by the cover of an Elden. To Slade’s
