The Elf Who Didn't Like Christmas - Jessie Best

THE ELF WHO DIDN’T LIKE CHRISTMAS

    By Jessie L. Best

The Elf Who Didn’t Like Christmas

Ralph sat in the snowbank, his feet icy cold, his ears reddened and sore from the freezing temperature. Large snowflakes fluttered down from the snow-laden clouds hovering above him. Ralph was already beginning to regret his hasty and sad departure from Santa’s house. He wiped the snow from his eyelashes and looked around. As he gazed across the vast sea of white, he thought about how helpful Santa’s flying reindeer would be right about then. They would have me out of this pickle in no time! he cried aloud. But, alas, no one heard him. Packing up his little bag, he had told no one he was leaving.

Now he was beginning to feel remorse. The tiniest bit of shame crept over him when he realized that they all might be worried. Santa and the other elves had been too busy to bother with him so close to Christmas. The making and packaging of toys, the reading of a multitude of letters to Santa, and the preparing of a huge amount of decorations had taken up all their time. Still too young to read and too small to do much of the heavy lifting of the gift-wrapped toys, Santa’s smallest elf felt left out. It was his first Christmas since he had come to live with Santa and he didn’t like it at all.
