Chapter One
~ Daisy ~
––––––––
Charlie was the eternal bachelor. The phrase shag and move on could have been coined by him, and probably was. When I first met him, he seemed too much of a gentleman to be such a player, and I wondered if the press had it all wrong, but then I saw the stream of women that trailed around after him.
I’d been hired as nanny by Alex and Sylvie Hamilton, otherwise known as rock stars AJ and Sizzle, and I looked after their toddler while they embarked on their current world tour. It was my dream job. At only twenty-two, I was travelling further than I could have imagined, chilling out with the rich and famous, and getting to know Charlie.
He played rhythm guitar in the band, and had always been my favourite. Was it the combination of spiked blonde hair, greeny-brown eyes, and the dirtiest smile I’d ever seen? My old bedroom at my mums still had posters with Charlie’s face on them. He’d locked eyes with me once at a crowded, sweaty gig in Manchester, and flashed that smile, and I was a goner. I never, in a million years, would have imagined I’d get to meet him, let alone sleep with him.
Getting to see him on a regular basis was definitely the highlight of my brilliant job.
I guess it went in his favour that his exes still loved him. He couldn’t be all bad. Would I be classed as an ‘ex’? We’d slept together, just the once, following a drunken party. And I knew it would only be a one-off. Charlie was like quicksilver—impossible to hold on to.
Maybe I could elevate myself from a one-nighter to a fuck-buddy? I travelled with the band, and that meant I was on hand and readily available.
It wasn’t what I wanted.
I wanted a proper relationship with him. Dates and hanging out together, cooking dinner together, sex obviously. And I wanted him to myself. It crucified me every time I saw him parading yet another beauty, in the full knowledge that she would be sharing his bed that night. I dreamed of being the one that tamed him. That he fell in love with.
So, the big question, the six-million-dollar-question: if I couldn’t have what I wanted, would I take what crumbs I could get?
We’d been in New Zealand for a week, and finally had a couple of days downtime. Sylvie had given me the night off, and Charlie had suggested we go out somewhere. Together. I’d already been waiting half an hour, while trying to make myself look as though I was busy. Did he forget about me? I’d already figured that appearing needy would be a complete turn-off.
I perched on a stool in the kitchen and scrolled blankly through Facebook on my phone, unable to keep my mind away from that blissful night we hooked up. Alex and Sylvie were holding a party, and since I’d only been working for them a few weeks, it was my first chance to actually speak to Charlie. I knew his reputation of course, but I hadn’t been prepared for the force of his charm.
Charlie danced with me, holding me close and fiddling with the spiky ends of my hair, declaring it felt softer than it looked. We’d both had plenty to drink, and any doubts I’d nurtured about getting involved with him had long since disappeared.
He took my hand and led me outside—it was the middle of winter and freezing—but with his arm wrapped around my shoulders I felt warm, tucked snugly into his body. Together we stumbled down the gravel track toward the nearby beach. It was madness. With only moonlight to guide us and the sound of the waves crashing onto the shore, we laughed like teenagers. And there, standing on the damp sand, he kissed me. Our bodies pressed so close together, I could hear his heart beating, and feel his pulse beneath my fingers as I twined my hands around his neck.
I want you, Daisy.
Here?
I laughed aloud. I’ve never done it on the sand before.
He pulled back and grinned at me. I saw his white teeth in the dim light, and smelled the alcohol on his breath.
He nuzzled at me, his cold fingers sliding beneath my satin shirt. Maybe on a warmer night. I wasn’t planning on frostbite.
He nibbled my earlobe. Electric shocks darted straight to my groin. We could go somewhere warmer.
I nodded, and let my head fall back as I gave myself up to the delicious sensations from his lips. Back to my room?
Yes, please.
He delicately nipped the side of my throat and I was lost.
We walked back to the house, hands entwined, but saying little. I feared that if I spoke, it would break the spell. Oh. My. God. I’d be shagging Charlie Jones. Anxiety bubbled in my chest. He was such a player; would he be disappointed with me?
I’d had two boyfriends so far, and neither of them was particularly adventurous. Shagging in the back of the car was as daring as I’d ever been. I knew I didn’t fit Charlie’s usual type. I wasn’t skinny, blonde or a model. I didn’t wear inch-thick makeup, or have immaculate painted nails, and I liked my food.
Maybe he wanted someone normal for a change?
From the minute I closed my bedroom door behind us, he held me tightly in his arms and kissed me with an intensity that turned my knees to jelly.
*
Hey.
The jingle of keys dragged me from my memories. Flustered, I looked up to see Charlie’s grin.
Come on, I’ve got us a car for tonight.
He led me outside to a four-door sedan, and opened the door for me, before sliding behind the wheel.
Where are we going? Am I dressed okay?
He’d warned me to dress casually. Accordingly, I wore faded jeans, flat jewelled sandals and a shiny camisole top, carrying a lightweight cashmere cardigan in case I felt cool later.
Charlie looked at me properly now, for the first time today. His eyes swept down my body, and lingered briefly on my chest before his smile increased a few notches. Yeah,
he said softly. You look very okay.
To my delight, he leaned across and claimed a kiss. A light, fleeting brush across my lips. My heart soared.
I’m tempted to skip dinner,
he murmured. You look good enough to eat.
My muscles tightened at the prospect of what might happen later and I
