Australian Poetry 1850–1945
When gullies were dales and creeks were brooks
there were four-figure sales for poetry books.
When the woods went bush with the swags and blackfellas
the poetry push became best-sellers
till the time was ripe for the clever blokes
and the only rich tripe was a five-star hoax.
Then depression and war seemed permanent fixtures
and most of the punters had gone to the pictures.

It’s a bar like any other in downtown Storyville.
The animals talk and the men have speech impediments
or bad accents, like the Englishman, Irishman and Scot
or the rabbi, the priest and the mufti who drink together
when they’re not walking three abreast down an unnamed street
behind three golfers who are always par for the course.

Another Day at the Office
He winds up like a pitcher on the mound
then signs a voluminous piece of paper
as if the training-wheels are still attached
to his arm inspects the Praetorian Guard,
weeds out one whose eyebrows dance
another who looks dangerously proactive
time for a couple of executive tweets
from the lounge at the airfield then off
to a golf course in the Emirates
with the world’s largest bunker
where his own name shimmers in
mega lights that can be seen from Space.
He needs to be seen to be being something.
