    The wind blowing off the bay was frigid and it wormed its way through all the layers of clothes I was wearing. The warmth was being leeched away every moment I was standing there exposed to the elements. The sun glowed with a wane light and seemed so far away. There was no warmth there hidden behind a gauze of wispy clouds. I adjusted my gloves and tucked the thick scarf back in around my head. There were no other sounds but that gusty breeze and the snow it was bound to bring from the north. The landscape surrounding me was barren and white, the snow-covered ground permanently coated with a glaze of ice.

    Just behind me, a door popped opened, the hinges protesting in the sub-zero temperatures. I turned around. I was several yards away from the bunker. Someone wrapped up in the same cold-weather gear came tromping towards me, face obscured by goggles and scarf. I waited until whoever-it-was stopped in front of me. The newcomer pulled back the goggles and scarf.

    Dan, we need you inside. There’s a whole new batch of data from the sensor arrays that you’ve just got to see for yourself.

    Jenna’s voice was pitched higher and she was clearly excited by the findings. I smiled in response to her infectious grin. God she was cute. Why hadn’t I ever realized that before?

    Well, let’s get back then, I said.
