The Darkest Hour - Scarlet Young

    CHAPTER 1

    ––––––––

It hung in the air, a scent that was as old as life itself. It wasn’t from some wild animal, no. Not dead fish or an injured deer. It smelled different, like a delicacy, and despite what they hoped for, they knew it was human. Human blood. The first case had been reported as an animal attack, but Niko knew different. He saw the body long before the police had arrived on the scene. The claw marks across the chest, the haphazardly-eaten limbs, and midsection. It was no animal; it was a monster, one which he knew too well because Niko was that monster as well.

    Another one?

Yeah, and it was a hunter. It’s safe for us to assume that it’s no longer just a coincidence. Niko responded, looking around at the men and women who stood and sat around him.

Six men and women, all of them connected by blood and a passion to protect one another. They were family, a pack and they would look after each other with their lives. But somehow, something had come to put the lives they had built in jeopardy and they would have to act quickly to stop it.

It’s obviously not one of us, so another shifter from a different pack? Rick asked, looking around at everyone in the room.

I’d have smelled them the moment they got into town. It can’t be. Lucia shot back.

But it wasn’t any of us, Niko echoed, staring up at the moon through the foliage. Rick is right, somehow another shifter got into our territory and attacked a hunter. We don’t know why they did it, and worse, we don’t know how they got in. But the fact that they can means bad news for us. Whoever these shifters are, we have to find them and stop them first.

Because in the end, they’ll be coming for us, Lucia added, jumping off the branch she had sat on. As Beta, she was inclined to agree with what Niko had said, but as a person, she was the most logical member of the pack. If another pack makes it into our territory and successfully sneaks up on us, then there’s no telling who would come out on top. We can’t have that happen, so we go after them.

Theo took a deep breath, tasting the air. He blinked a few times, mapping out areas of New Bern in his head. He could still tell where the previous hunter had been murdered only three weeks ago. The smell of the blood was faint but still lingered. Both scenes are only about six, maybe seven hundred meters apart. It’s just on the outskirts of town. If a rival pack is close, that’s where they would be laying low; that’s where we find them.

Niko nodded at his brother, turned toward the rest of his pack, and gave a deep growl. It was one that resonated inside their very hearts. They knew what the Alpha had decided on, and they had heard his orders. Niko turned and leaped into the trees with the rest of his pack following close behind him. The trees barely had
