Her Cowboy's Fake Proposal (Prequel) - Audree Snow

    Chapter 1

Every time Colton walked down the street, he was reminded of how far he still had to go.

Sure, he had come a long way from the farming town of his youth, and his bank account had grown to sizes that even city-slickers would raise an eyebrow at, but the city he called home was barely even a city at all.

If he really wanted to be successful—which he had since he was very young—he would need to take his skill to a real city. Somewhere like New York, or maybe a big city on the West Coast... somewhere with more than just a couple million people.

Colton thought about all of this constantly, but as he walked into his favorite café that morning, he was dwelling on it even more than usual. He'd had a big victory at work the day before, the sort that the whole company celebrated. Someone even brought out a couple bottles of champagne.

Yet, here he was, the very next morning, no different than he had been the morning before and no different than he would be the next day. For the briefest of moments, he had wondered if maybe the corporate life simply wasn't as rewarding as he had hoped, but it hadn't taken him long to correct that thought.

Just a plain coffee is fine, he said as he got to the counter.

On a normal morning, the barista would give him a strange look for paying a premium for coffee from a café when all he wanted was black coffee, but it was busy in the shop. Unquestioningly, she keyed his order into the cash register, pointed him in the direction of where he would need to pick it up, and turned her gaze to the next customer. Colton moved down the line, wondering if once he made it big in New York the barista would think him worthy of a second glance.

Colton was not known for his patience, and he drummed his fingers impatiently against the counter as he waited for his coffee. He didn't see too many people ahead of him, a couple holding hands even as they argued about something, and a rather beautiful young woman were the only people he could make out. And though his gaze lingered for a moment on the woman, he didn't think it could be long before all three of them had gotten their orders. His simple black coffee would only be a few seconds behind.

He lost himself in the distraction of his phone, watching only out of the corner of his eye as coffees were claimed from the counter and more people gathered around to wait for their own. He responded to a few texts and checked his email to see what new
