    Foreword

    C.J. Bernstein

In the fall of 2005, the remains of Roosevelt Island’s crumbling insane asylum were demolished to make way for condominiums. In the rubble, a worker found the only known copy of Ackerly Green’s Guide to MAGIQ. Originally published in 1956, the book had been all but lost to time. The guide was scanned and photographed by interested parties who were dedicated to its survival. But soon after, the guide mysteriously disappeared from their possession and was lost again.

I won’t reveal how it arrived in my hands years later (a mystery for another time), but my family and I were taken with the guide, to say the least. We read it (or played it, as our two children often said) several times and shared it with many friends, all of whom were also fascinated by it. But, in time, it was inevitably stuffed into the third kitchen drawer over from the oven and forgotten, as many odd objects, like broken buttons and empty spools of thread, are. Though we cherished the book, it seems it wanted to be forgotten.

Sometime later, I was contacted by those who first scanned the guide after they’d tracked the original to me (another mystery). They’d opened the original scan files and found them corrupted, unreadable. So they’d spent years trying to get the tattered original back. I opened the kitchen drawer and found the guide had turned to flakes of paper and dust. We poured its remains onto the kitchen counter, hoping to salvage something, but the guide was lost.

    Or so we thought.

That night at dinner, I told my family about the people who’d come looking for the guide. My son ran out of the room and returned moments later with a plain notebook.

I opened the cover and knew what it was immediately. Years prior, while practicing his writing, he’d decided to recreate the guide for himself. So he copied it, word for word, letter for letter. And he’d kept it under his bed for safekeeping, reading it every night by the light of the streetlamp outside his window. I can’t quite explain the feeling of holding it in my hands again: an old friend come to visit.

This is a faithful reproduction of my son’s reproduction of an odd, little book that no one can quite explain the existence or purpose of. But I will say this: I’ve known dozens of people who have read this guide and found its content, its counsel, to be life-changing. Akin to newfound faith, or lost love returned. Wonder, to put it frankly. Something that powerful— something so needed in this world— is not meant to live alone in the third kitchen drawer over from the oven.

All we know is that the guide seems to have been a companion piece to a book series that has all but disappeared from history. A series some call the Lost Collection. The search for that collection and the truth behind its disappearance continues to this day.

I hope you experience the wonder within these pages that so many before you have. Welcome to the world of magiq.

    Before You Begin

This is the culmination of years of work and dedication, and here it is: the beginning of everything that is to come. You are moments from knowing what you have begged to know.

You must be mentally and physically prepared for the rigors of the following exam. You must center your mind and left justify your body. You must gird your spirit and steady your physical hands.

The guide will look like a collection of strange questions, many of which you won’t be sure how to answer, and that is the point. It is more than an exam. It is a scope that can look into your very spirit, hint at your possible future, and portend your affinity, guild affiliation, and what source you might draw your magimystical power from, if you are adept at magic at all.

For the assessment to be truly effective, you MUST take your time and answer every question as who you are RIGHT NOW, not who you wish to be someday. The guide will know the difference, and if you don’t answer truthfully… well, as the old saying goes, Woe betide those who cross the MAGIQ Guide.

If you do not agree with the outcome, you may, of course, take the exam again at another time. Magimystical currents are everchanging and fickle, as is the truth. And though the Guide is perfect in its execution, you are allowed to choose your own path.

Now close your eyes. Now open them. How did you know that I asked you to open your eyes if they were closed? Do you have transparent eyelids?

    Philosomancy

While attempting philosomancy, you accidentally transform yourself into a book during a botched verbafuge spell. Now someone must read you from beginning to end in order to reverse the enchantment.

Would you prefer to be enjoyed by a lone bookworm in the cozy window seat of a musty library?

    Muffled

    Beckoning

If you now find yourself aware of something beckoning you from just outside your range of vision, do not try to look at it.

    You Are Ebenguard

Burdened and blessed, you are the shore between land and sea, the horizon between night and day. Others may wander blindly through their lives, adrift on the seas of fate. But part of you has always known your path, always believed there is reason and purpose and a secret order infusing your existence. All existence. You are right.

You have been gifted a higher calling. You are a defender of The Golden Balance, the true hidden harmony of the world. The line that crosses through us all, segments the great forces, and brings order to the chaos of existence. The law of all life. That is what governs us, protects us, guides us.

You’ve probably always felt an innate sense of right and wrong, known your life was guided by a truer current. But you’ve also wondered what to do with that sense of what is true and right in a world of gray that separates who you are from what you do. The truth is you may be a civic-minded advocate, gathering people to a noble cause. Or an artist, inspired and inspiring wonder in others. You might hone your body using martial magic, or sharpen your mind against the whetstone of knowledge.

Truly, you may have several potentials, for you are the light of Ebenguard, and that means you are capable of a great many good things. But do not think of yourself as elite. Know that who you are is not as important as what you do with the life you are given. Take on any endeavor, explore your power and potential, but whatever you do must be in service of the world around you, and to the law of The Golden Balance.

You are a figure for good, for right. You might have been born to be an advocate for justice or a champion for the subjugated, a mediator for forces at war or a storyteller illuminating those in shadow. No matter who you choose to be, when the scales tip to the side of disorder and darkness, you are called to right it, a warrior for peace and truth and harmony. For harmony and true peace are only possible through the dedication and diligence of those willing to swear their life’s work to it.

We stand brave, united on the shores of day and night. We are Ebenguard.

    You Are Balimora

A voice calls to you in the rustle of leaves. The echo in a darkened hollow. Your name is on the breath of the world. Hear it now. While others talk ceaselessly, you listen. Not to the chatter of society, or the empty rules and procedures of civilization. You have always been drawn to the wild, the untamed. The trappings of culture hold no interest for you, nor the false borders and boundaries it provides. Perhaps you hear another call: the words of the land itself. It speaks of desecration and decay, of birth and rebirth. It asks for help, and, in turn, offers it. It calls for a protector and longs to protect under its great canopy.

There are no laws. Natural rule is a lie. The world heeds a higher law. Whether you know it or not, you have been called to tend that deeper balance, The Great Chaos of the verdant world.

This land is as beautiful as it is wild and dangerous, powerful. But still, it needs caretakers, seers, sentinel— those who will take up the mantle, to cut away the blight and nurture the fragile seeds of beauty. Regardless of the ramifications to the unnatural world. You will bring shade where brightest, and light where darkest, for now you know this land has endured longer than memory and deeper than rational thought. And it will continue to endure under your care. For that is your calling. Your love for nature and awareness of a deeper, more verdant truth in the world will lead you to ancient paths of knowledge, and skills to defend it. Lay your hands in the soil and borrow powerful magic, magic that calls on the chaotic source of all magic. You will be granted gifts to destroy and to repair. Under your judgment. Free of law. Only The Great Chaos matters now.

As an agent of the land, your obligation is to seek out the patterns of decay and life reaching for the sky, feel where change is required, and take action.

The land endures. The land, and you, are Balimora.

    You Are Thornmouth

It tears at you, doesn’t it? The void you cannot fill. The itch in your mind that you can’t scratch. Have you ever felt a single night stretch endlessly on and on, as you lost yourself within the pages of a fascinating book? Did you realize at the time that you were performing magic, a rare, innate incantation called The Endless Night of Learning? You were born with a gift, a light that burns inside you, a fire that feeds on knowledge. The more you learn and seek the truth of this world and worlds beyond, study the ancient deeds and lost accounts, or the great forgotten histories, the more brilliant the Mindflame grows."

You are a lantern in a diminished world, lifting your light high, pushing back the shadows with the brilliant fire of knowledge.

You are a beacon for the world, to help remember the past, understand the present, and shape what is to come. Perhaps you will be an historian, a scientist, astronomer, scholar, teacher. You might long to unravel The Great Historical Unknown, or perhaps explore the connections and systems that underlie this world and what lies above, below… Beyond. All who carry the flame are welcome to share in our solitude of learning, those who carry within them the burning wish to know all are beckoned forth. Hold aloft the light of the Mindflame.

In time you might learn the magimystics to decipher forgotten languages, unravel ciphered texts, piece together the shattered shards of secret ages. You may incite a book to speak its words to you as you coax another to reveal its subliminal subtexts. You will study great magic and learn more than a common mind could ever hope to hold. Knowledge is the ultimate prize in this existence, your life’s reward to find the truth in everything, and to shine all you know down upon the world.

Explorers of then and to come, the reaches beyond, and the source within. We are Thornmouth.

Listen well, my brothers and sisters. Fortune calls to us from the horizon! You’ve been searching for something all your life. But you’ve been told that longing for anything more than what’s around you is fruitless, searching for anything beyond your life a waste. But your heart longs to challenge the words of your parents, teachers, and elders. You are pulled by the string of fate to make your own discoveries, to explore the world for yourself. You ache to forge your own beliefs, blaze unwalked trails. You may be headstrong, but also smart and resourceful. You may be gregarious, having made many friends along your life’s path (and maybe an enemy or two.)

You are undoubtedly spontaneous. Your sharp tongue might land you in a scrape, but you’ll never fear plunging back into the fray. After all, there’s an opportunity to be had, and who knows if it’ll come around again?

Know there’s a reason for your longing, a purpose to your pangs. The thing you seek but cannot name is what Weatherwatchers call The Further Fire. And you will spend your every spare thought, your life’s every moment, hunting it, seeking it, called by it. So heed the call and follow, for the truth you have always wanted to hear is that nothing here is more exhilarating than the wind in your face as you race towards adventure. Nothing is more comforting than the luck of the sea and the blessing of the sky, and no challenge can’t be overcome with a flash of your smile or a slash of your blade! With a little charm, a resourceful plan, and the determination to beat the odds, you will meet the call out there in the unknown and return home to a rousing crowd of those who once doubted you to share the spoils of your victory!

So come, let us tarry no longer! Let’s head out across the wilder waters. Who knows the dangers we might find there, what wrongs we may right, the endless treasures that await us? What fires we may light and be kindled by in turn!

Onward, to The Further Fire. We are Weatherwatch!

    You Are Flinterforge

A day spent without soiled hands is a day wasted. You’ve never been one to shy away from big ideas or the hard work required to make those ideas manifest. You are a big thinker, an imaginer of machines to make life better, of curious treatments to make life longer: ways to grow stronger crops, methods to forge stronger tools. You don’t wait for problems to solve themselves. You get your hands dirty and solve them yourself. You’ve probably taught yourself a thousand skills to solve a thousand problems and are still open to learn from others. After all, what good is the sharpest of minds, the keenest of ideas, without the know-how to bring those thoughts into fruition?

The botanist and the farmer. The architect and the carpenter.

Perhaps you took apart your favorite toy as a child just to see how it worked. And upon putting it back together, you might’ve realized it worked better than it did before. Perhaps you are the one with the strange ideas, unique ideas to make the old ways work better. Somewhere inside you is the potential to be an engineer, a tinkerer, a maker. An alchemist. An artificer. Whoever you are, never doubt for a moment that above all, you are a creator. You seek not only to see new light, but to create it. To do what has never been done. And to do what has been done, even better.

You’ve always been drawn to the wonder of breaking and remaking things, both objects and ideas. To understand them, recreate them, improve them. That is The Day’s Work, the purpose of every dawning morning and every glowing dusk. To do all you can with the skills you have, in the short time you are given. All to better our world. Come, explore the possibilities of your ideas, the potential of your discoveries. Push the boundaries of their purpose, and yours.

Create something no one else could’ve imagined and use it to change everything. You are an ideasmith, and here is where you mine what is possible. We are Flinterforge.

Can you feel it, the heartbeat of life around us, the call of The Common Drum? A hand brushes against your own, a stranger’s hand. But it’s not unwelcome. Breathe deep, look around, and listen. Take a moment to witness the beauty of the sky, the colors of the trees. Hear the music of the land. Embrace what is around you right here and now. Now take the hand of the one next to you and see that all the colors become more vivid. The light becomes softer, warmer, the sky bigger, more beautiful. The world is not meant to be experienced alone. It is more beautiful when we look upon it together and help those we stand beside to see it more clearly.

You live in this moment, the dance of life. Offering your hand to another for support, encouragement, for solace and hope. Your heartbeats echo together in your grasp. That is The Common Drum. You are the many and the one, a member in a loose, ever-changing assembly of tribes that come together to share in the experience of life, a community that embraces all. Welcoming all who are in need. Respect life, and you are always welcome.

Perhaps you will be a healer, tending to the wounds of the body with curative songs. Or a great champion, fighting to free the enslaved with the shared spirits of brave warriors in your heart. Or perhaps a teacher, expanding and sharing your innate understanding of the world and others with empathy magic. Your magic alone is but a flicker in the face of the bonfire that burns when we are joined. You are here to inspire, entertain, and enkindle. To welcome those eager to learn from what you share, and share in turn in what they are here to offer the world. Breathe deep, see those around you, and listen. Take a moment. See the beauty in their lives, the vivid colors of their world. Hear what they are saying. If they ask for help, do what you can. Listen to their hearts if they are willing to let you. Share in The Common Drum. That is magic.

By absorbing yourself in the written accounts of travelers who have gone before you, using their words to explore and discover by proxy?

By taking a walk through your familiar surroundings and attempting to discover something new in the mundane details that get overlooked on a typical day?

Consider this your first and only warning. If you continue past this point, it is with the knowledge that everything you know could be changed irrevocably by the time you return, if you return at all. How will you proceed?

With an open mind, ready to embrace the novelty of adventure and the excitement of discovery without hesitation or reservation.

With a tender heart, in which there will be equal space for the preservation of cherished memories and for new experiences and relationships to take root.

    You Are Ardeonaut

    Affinity: Halcyor’s Unwinding

There were those who said your aims were foolish, but if it’s foolish to venture into uncertainty, then it is even more foolish to stay where you are. You do not fear the unknown, no more than you fear closing your eyes at the end of each day. If anything, you fear its antithesis: comfort and routine, settling for the mundane. Placidity is not in your blood; you could never be satisfied so long as there are seas to sail and secrets to discover.

You long to see your bow cut through towering white waves, en route to unknown horizons. The thought of an undiscovered speck of land flickering in the lens of your telescope makes your heart pound in hopes of what treasure, mystery, or danger might await you. The favored child of the sun, it casts on you a brilliant fire to light your path and brings others closer to your warmth and brilliance. A light that calls you to your place behind the ship’s wheel.

Whether on land or at sea, you are always at the helm. Your particular leadership skills come so naturally that it often seems as though you were born to command and assign roles, to encourage and entrust, to make difficult decisions when needed. And maybe this is true. At the end of the day, you are the captain your compatriots need you to be in order to seek out the Further Fires of your collective hearts. You understand what they need to see and hear from you to feel their strongest and their bravest, for you know each of them not merely by their faces but by the complexities of their souls: their skills and doubts, the desires and dreams that make them who they are. With you, they feel seen. Following you, they find their purpose. From the precipice upon which you stand, the salt of the sea mingles with the crisp air of first dawn, and it feels as though with each breath, you are inhaling all possibility.

If you were to look over your shoulder, you would find a motley team of dreamers and reachers, wanderers and explorers, all with many, varied talents to offer and skills to share. But they have one thing in common: their belief in you to lead them, walking together towards the next wondrous unknown.

You are Ardeonaut-bearing Weatherwatch, born to lead others ever closer to the sun under which you were born. Look, now, how the sun is born anew; it shines its fire on your next wondrous discovery.

    You Are Navimant

    Affinity: Phantasmal Accord

Although you are grateful for the small community whose voices still linger in the air as you break away from the pack, you recognize the relief when the untouched woods you come upon eventually fade to silence as you delve deeper into the unknown dark.

You prefer the company of your shadow to the boisterous energy of your crew, savoring the focus that solitude provides as you combine your magiq, experience, and well-honed skills to explore the land and set the pace of those who will walk behind you someday. While others seek trails, you create them. Though the thought of discovering a lost city or ancient ruin is as exciting to you as to the rest of your guild kin, you relish the thrill of being the first and only to step foot on seemingly untouched shores. To see where the path of your unknown adventure might twist and turn as it divulges its secrets to you alone.

Your spontaneity and comfort in the umbrage of deep woods and murky glens have proven invaluable on your lookout for new opportunities, allowing you to peer through the darkness to find useful resources in places where others would feel lost. In the quiet, even through the thickest fog, you can instinctively sense the uncharted way forward. As a result, you often forge ahead alone, seeking and surveying for the best route while the rest of your crew keeps pace steadily behind, allowing you to lead, with complete faith in your abilities to guide them true.
