    Maria held the delicate card between her fingers.

    The gold embossed letters danced along the shimmering white surface. To the unsuspecting eye, it was just a normal card, but Maria knew the power it had.

    Maria’s mouth felt dry.

    The Banquet had long been considered a myth among women such as Maria, something they told each other on nights when their minds were on the verge of drowning in the darkness.

    She never imagined she would receive an invitation.

    Maria studied the card, fearing it might be a prank. She wouldn’t be able to bear it. She had suffered too much to face more humiliation and shame.

    It felt real, authentic, like actual money had been spent on making such a lavish card. Pranksters wouldn’t go that far. Would they?

    She rose from her booth and looked around the vast office floor. Tops of head bobbed above the surface of grey cubicles. There was no one there she could speak to or show the card to. She wasn’t sure if anyone had experienced the same kind of traumatic event that she had.
