IN THE YEAR 1983 at three p.m. Friday, the school bell rung.

The weekend had begun for Dela and his best friend Kevin. As they ran through the hallways straight out the front door of Lorah Park Elementary School, in Brownsville —B.K.A. Brown Sub—.

Standing in front of the schoolyard, Kevin spotted Latresah who'd liked Dela. He told Dela to ask if he could carry her books for her.

    No! Dela fired back quickly.

Why not?... You to chicken to do so, he teased.

"Never that Kevin, and where do you come up with all this phraseology on females and you don't have one.

You have life bent Dela! I do have a girlfriend for your information.

Yeah....Right! And my name is Willie lunch meat.

Dela went ahead and asked if he could carry her books.

She just paused and then handed them over to him without saying a word.

He couldn't believe what Kevin said had exactly worked.

As they walked along Kevin teased him by rubbing his two pointer fingers across one another saying; Dela's in love, but only for him to hear it.

Dela and Latresah asked each other simple little questions like What's your favorite color, slow jams, and things of that nature.

When they made it three houses before hers he asked for her number?"

No!.... My daddy will kill me if he knew I was talking to a boy. But you can give me yours? she said.

What she said had him spooked, but he still gave her the number.

Thanks for carrying my books and giving me your number, she said while blushing.

You welcome, and see you Monday, he replied.

I told you it would work, Dela.

    Yes, you did, Kev.

Kevin and Dela were excited for the weekend. It was Dela's turn to spend the night at his house.

When Dela made it home his oldest brother Wayne told him to get everything he was going to take over to Kev's house. He grabbed his Atari 1600 along with a few other games.

After bathing and packing a few clothes he was ready to go.

He hugged his great-great-grandmother Marie Waters, which he calls her mom.

Have fun sugar and be good, she said.

    Yes ma'am.

Wayne helped toke his little brother's things over to Kevin's house. Which was only two houses down.

When they made it there Dela was greeted by Ms. Porter Kevin's mother.

Hey there Dela? How are you doing? Are you hungry?

    Yes ma'am, he said.

The only reason he said yes was that she hates when someone says no thanks to her when she offers something.

While Ms. Porter talked with Wayne, Dela and Kevin started setting up Dela's wrestling ring.

They always wrestle with one another.

I'm Junk Yard Dog and you are Hulk Hogan, he told Kevin.

He agreed and the way they went to play.

Kevin had made two championship wrestling belts out of cardboard boxes.

This match between them was for both belts, the winner takes all.

Dela had body-slammed Kevin on to the bed and went for the pin. In which someway somehow Kev had slipped out of it.

The figure four Kev placed Dela in trying to get him to tap out. But he was not going for that. He reversed the figure four on to Kev and he couldn't handle the pressure and he tapped out.

    Are you sure you give?

Yes! Yes! I give Dela, he said just wanting him to let go so he could redeem himself.

As soon as he released him from the figure four and turned his back to him cheering to the fans; I'm the champ!

Kev snuck up behind Dela and dee-dee-tee him on the bed then grabbed both belts and ran out of the room chanting; I'm the real champ B.A.B.Y! as he flexed his little muscles.

Dela was hot because he cheated, but he could not blame anyone but himself, because he did it to him twice now, with that I give mess.

I'm not going to fall for it anymore that's for sure, he said to himself.

Time to eat you guys, Ms. Porter shouted.

They ran to the bathroom and washed their hands and then off to the races again to the dinner table.

Rice, hot dogs, and porkin' beans, my favorite, they both said at the same time until Dela knocked on wood first.

They hurried and ate so they could get back to playing. But Kev's mom made them watch a movie.

Halfway through the movie, they were out for the count.

They were awoken by the aroma of eggs, grits, biscuits, and bacon.

Kevin and Dela rushed into the bathroom to brush up and washed their little faces.

Ms. Porter was running late for work she told her oldest child Tracey to watch the boys.

When Dela heard that his little heart started beating fast. He was in love with Kevin's sister.

Why you always look at my sister like that?

Your sister is pretty and fine, that's why, he replied.

Yuck! You have no taste what so ever.

While eating breakfast Tracey had called her best friend Sonia over to the house.

Just tell me you like her to Dela?

Hell yeah! She's fine and pretty as your sister. But I will settle for Tracey if I had to choose.

I know what I'm going to get you for Christmas.

What's that Kev? He curiously asked.

Some taste, because you don't have any in your body, none what so ever.

Dela reached over and put Kevin in the headlock, and said; I see you have jokes this morning, Kev.

There was a knock at the front door and Tracey went and answered it.

Dela, your brother wants you, she shouted.

He jumped up and ran to the door.

You boys want to ride with me today? Wayne asked.

"Yes, Dela said because he knew they're going to hang out on fifteenth avenue and at his car wash.

Wayne, you have to ask Tracey if Kev can roll with us?

I'll handle that okay, Wayne informed him.

Tracey had agreed on letting them ride with Wayne, but he had to have them back at the house before her mother gets off work at six o'clock p.m.

The boys rode around Miami having a ball in Wayne's tricked out seven-tre-Chevy convertible—which is called verts for short—.

He allowed the boys to make a little money washing a few cars at his car wash.

Afterward, Wayne took them to Capital Hill seventy-first street and fifteenth avenue. Uncle Al and the Sugar Hill DJ's were jamming. The ave was lit and thick to death.

The kids ate conch and fries from Miracle's restaurant.

Kevin loved when Wayne takes them on rides. Because he didn't have a brother to hang out with. He remembers when Dela and him first met in kindergarten. When the kids picked on him because he was a little smarter than others and Dela stopped them from bullying him in class.

Dela, do you remember when we cut our right hands until it bled and then we shook hands in your back yard?

Yes, I will never forget that Kev. That's the day we made a blood pact and our friendship became stronger, Blood Brother's for life Kevin.

FOUR YEARS LATER and it was the first day of junior high school. Dela was dressed to impress with a blue suede Bally sweatsuit and red suede blue soft bottom Bally loafers.

He dashed himself with a little Photo Lagerfeld cologne and shined his four upper solid gold crown teeth. He was now ready to go.

Wayne allowed him to drive his Chevy vert to school.

Dela had picked up Kevin. He was also dressed fly as ever with a tan and black MCM leather sweatsuit, all-black Lotto's sneakers, and his wooden handle hair bush so he could keep his waves bushed.

As they pulled up in front of Brownsville Junior High School, bumping—another term for playing—'How Deep Is Your Love' by Kieth Sweat.

All the girls were jocking the Chevy. They wanted to know who was the driver of the heavily tinted car.

When Dela got out of the driver side and Kevin got out of the passenger side. All eye's opened wide and mouths dropped to the ground.

Bet that up, Big Bro, he said as he tossed him the keys.

    Anytime.

As they walked through the hallways. People were whispering, There goes them boys who was in that candy apple red bowling ball vert.

After they heard that they knew that had definitely made a good impression on the first day of Junior High.

The bell had sounded off and Dela and Kevin gave each other dap and then went to their first-period class.

    3

LAURIE AND BAYLA, Dela's oldest sister and second to the oldest brother. They were chilling at their great-great-grandmother's house.

    When Dela arrived from football practice, he was greeted by Bayla;

What's happening with you, Lil' Bro?

    Nothing much.

What's up, sis? Dela greeted his favorite sister.

You. How was practice today? She asked.

Good. Where's Timecca at? He asked the whereabouts of his baby sister.

Still at cheerleading practice, Laurie informed him.

Dela went and gotten undressed and took a nice hot bath. Afterwards, he went and greeted his baby.

Hey there, my number one lady?

Hey, Sugar! How was your day in school? His moms asked.

It was okay I can't complain GOD has blessed me to see another beautiful day. Plus it's better now I'm chilling with my B.A.B.Y. he teased.

Get out of here mister smooth talker, she said blushing.

Ms. Marie Waters was Dela's pride and joy and his guardian angel. Who he loved with all his little heart. She did everything she could possibly do to keep her grandbaby happy.

He used to get in disputes pertaining to who was his real biological mother.

Gina was his biological mother. She would get highly upset her baby boy wouldn't claim her as his mother. She would become angry to the point of wanting to jump on him. But her grandmother would not allow her to place a finger on her baby.

You better talk some sense into that little fuc—

Say it Gina and I will get on your ass in here!

    Dela! His great-great-grandmother shouted.

As she waited for him to come, she was wondering. How could she break this down to him without hurting his feelings? That would be the last thing she wanted to do.

When he entered her bedroom, she told him to have a seat.

Is there something wrong mom? He asked.

No baby. I just have to explain something to you sugar. You know I love you right?

    Yes, ma'am.

Okay. You are a big boy now and you know Gina is your biological mother.

    No! You are my mother.

Listen to me okay!... I am your great-great grandmother and Gina is my granddaughter. So don't neglect her. She has feelings too. You will always be my baby. You hear me?

    Yes, ma'am, he replied.

Dela had taken it better then she thought.

    4

    DELA! Bayla shouted.

    What's up? Big Bro.

I need you to go pick up the money from my dope holes?

Okay then, I'm going to need your car, Bayla?

Damn! I have to cop you a car. Come on and drop me off to the duplex in the city.

    Okay, Big Bro.

They had jumped in Bayla's doo-doo brown colored seven-one Delta 88' convertible with the tan crush seats and top, M code fifty's, chunky lowe's and four dime EV's subwoofers bumping in the trunk.

After dropping him off he went and conducted business for his brother.

Bayla had dope holes all over Miami: Carol City, Brown Sub, Liberty City, Opa Locka, Little River area, Biscayne Boulevard, and Silver Blue apartments.

He didn't mind doing things for his big brother's. They always looked out for him and supported him in everything he gotten involved in.

When he made it to back the duplex, Bayla had girls hanging out everywhere. Instantly he became upset because Wayne always taught them business first and bullshit second.

He went to his room and told him he wanted to holler at him.

While waiting he asked the two females that were in the living room; Would they go and get something to eat for everybody?

They had agreed to his offer.

Once they left Dela began conducted business.

How are you kicking your game, Big Bro? You know we don't conduct business like this.

Stop taking everything so serious. That's that Wayne shit! Everything is Gucci, okay.

Bayla gave Dela two grand to buy himself a nice ride.

    Bet that up.

That's what big brother are for.

Today he found out that his two big brothers were like night and day when came down to conducting business.

    5

AFTER ATTENDING CHURCH on Esther Sunday with his baby girl. Kevin and Dela went to the Omni theater downtown Miami. Where everybody hangout on the holidays.

They made a little bet, on who would get the most numbers by the end of the night.

Dela teased Kev; Telling him You know you already lost, right!

Picture that with Kodak, homeboy, Kevin replied.

They walked around window shopping and hollering at females while waiting for their movie to start.

Kevin was up one on Dela, but Dela was not sweating the small stuff. He knew at the end of the day he was going to be on top.

After the movie, they began to tally up their numbers.

In the process of doing so, this pretty light skinned female stepped to Dela and asked if she could get his number?

He smiled and stated; Why certainly Lil' Momma. As long as I can get yours in return?

Being sporty Dela pulled out a christy twenty dollar bill and wrote his number on it.

That one number is not going to help you, Dela.

When all the numbers were tallied up. That last number that Dela had received put him ahead by one.

Boy, you are the luckiest dude I ever knew.

There's no luck about it Kev. I'm just a smooth player you ever saw, he teased.

I just can't believe this shit!

Believe it, homeboy. I'm just the real deal and you know it.

The real deal my foot! You have to have a rabbit foot in your pocket.

No rabbit foot. Just a whole lot of smooth-talking. I give out lessons if you are interested in taking my course. Always remember get back is a bitch, ain't it?

    Whatever, Dela.

Dela had finally got a little get back on Kevin. For the two times, he tricked him in wrestling and won both belts.

He kept up with the number count, and he knew they were tied. So he stepped to this pretty light skinned female and told her he would give her twenty dollars If she would approach him and give him her number in front of his homeboy. In which he knew this would put him ahead by one for the win.

Hey! What can a brother say? The only thing that beats the double-cross is the triple cross. Life's a bitch and death is her sister.

    6

DELA WAS STILL IN SEARCH of a car. Several dealerships he had gone to but came up short. He felt they weren't offering him the best bargain. He know Wayne knows more about purchasing a car than himself. The only thing he knew about a car was how to put gas in it and drive. But his pride did not want him to ask for help. He wanted to do it himself.

While chilling at the house Wayne asked; If everything was alright with him?

Yes, just in search of a decent car.

Oh yeah. How much money are you dealing with Lil' bro?

Quickly his mind went racing, trying to figure out was he trying to clock how much he had tallied up. He told him he had eight hundred dollars. In which he had two grand to play with. But he remembered what he had told him; Do not trust anyone in the game. So he took heed to his advice.

Keep your money, I will give you the seven-tre Chevy I don't use it anymore. Just keep it gas up and don't drive four deep. Because you do not have any restricts or driving license yet. I'll bring it to you tomorrow.

    Bet that up, big bro.

    * * * *

Dela had received a phone call from Kevin and noticed he sounded upset.

What's up with you Kev? He asked with much concern.

Kevin had hesitated before speaking. He didn't know how to break the news down to Dela.

Talk to me homey? What girl broke your little heart? Dela teased.

    Never that!

So what is it? You sound like you have been crying like a baby."

Whatever, we are moving to New Jersey next week.

What's wrong with going to New Jersey for a week Kev? You can't live without me huh? If you need some pointers on pulling females, you have my number and I got you.

It's not for a week. It's for good. I don't want to go, I want to stay down here, Kevin said.

WoW! That's crazy and I feel you. Let me talk to my mom and see if she can find out what's going on and see if you can stay with us if you don't want to go.

Okay then, bet that up, Dela.

As soon as she finds out what time it is, I will call you a.s.a.p.

Dela went and informed his mom about Kevin's situation. She was shocked when she heard the news. Because Ms. Porter didn't inform her about their departure.

Ms. Waters had called Ms. Porter and found out why they were leaving and she denied her invitation of letting Kevin stay with them. She had wished her and her family a safe trip there before hanging up.

    7

LAURIE, BAYLA, WAYNE, and their mom were all at Dela's football game showing family support.

Dela played three positions (RB) Running back, (CB) Cornerback, and (WR) Wide receiver. A triple threat on the football field.

He played for the Boy's Club optimist football team. They were playing Scott lake optimist team.

On third and five the coach put Dela in has (RB). Dela surveyed the defense. When the ball was snapped to the (QB) Quarterback, then handed off to Dela the (RB). The Scott Lakes swarming defense sent an all-out blitz. The (DE) defensive end grabbed Dela by his jersey but somehow someway he kept his legs moving and slipped out of the grasp of the (DE) and took off up the field for the first down and plenty more positive yardage. Thirty-five yards gained for the (RB) number twenty-two Dela.

When the defense thought they had him for a ten-yard loss.

Cheers were coming from Dela's family in the stands.

The Scott Lakes defense was getting manhandled by the Boy's Club offense. They needed to get a quick three and out so they could get a breather.

It was second and short for Boy's Club offense. Four-twenty-five left to
