    Introduction

    This report aims to provide a comprehensive overview of Directive (EU) 2019/882 of the European Parliament and of the Council of April 17, 2019, on the accessibility requirements for products and services, referred to as the European Accessibility Act (EAA),³ and its implications for the international publishing industry, particularly Canadian publishers.

    The EAA will apply to products and services, including ebooks, e‐readers, and e‐commerce, made available in the EU market from June 28, 2025, by European and international business operators.

    This report identifies and highlights the related opportunities and challenges for Canadian publishers and the Canadian publishing industry, in both English and French, by also providing some suggestions on how to prepare and adapt to the requirements.

    The report is organized in two parts: Part I describes the European Accessibility Act, including its relation to the Marrakesh Treaty; Part II covers the steps Canadian publishers should take to meet EAA requirements and expand their export base in the European market.
