    The eye closer

At some point, each of us will close our eyes.

    Forever.

And in some cases, someone else takes it from you.

But if someone does not die a natural death, but is murdered, it may be that the perpetrator cannot bear the stare of his victim or wants to spare himself it for some other reason.

The glazed look of a dead man.

I can understand that very well.

And the one we finally named >the eye-closer< seemed to feel the same way.

My name is Harry Kubinke. I am a chief detective in Berlin. Our department fights organized crime. In our job, you have to be able to rely on your colleagues. On my partner Rudi Meier, for example. Or Stefan Carnavaro and Oliver 'Ollie' Medina, with whom we've solved many a difficult case.

Or our boss, Mr. Kriminaldirektor Hoch, who was the first one in the office in the morning and the last one in the evening.

But as close as these companions may be to you as human beings in the daily fight against crime - that's how little you ultimately know about them.

About what makes up their true self, their personality.

Each of us has his secrets.

And sometimes it may even be better not to know all the secrets of others.

I'm a fanatic about justice, colleague Stefan Carnavaro told me at one point.

    Aren't we all?, I opined.

Otherwise, we would hardly have chosen this profession, Rudi added. "You have to be a bit fanatical, given the combination of low pay and high risk to life and limb.

Sometimes it might really be better not to know everything about your colleagues.

But you already think your part.

    One bedroom.

A man in a bed to die.

And another who has the mission to kill this man.

    The killer comes in.

    There is semi-darkness.

The moonlight shines through the window. Its light is as pale as a corpse.

    The color of death.

The man in bed has noticed what is about to happen. He reaches for the gun on his nightstand.

    Lightning fast.

    And yet not fast enough.

But the killer doesn't give him a chance to use this weapon either.

A shot from the silencer pistol in his hand stretches the victim onto the bed - so now the man lies there, ready for the kind of eternal sleep that never ends.

The killer turns on the light.

    A clean shot, he thinks.

For him, this order is nothing special.

    A thing like many others.

It becomes difficult when you are emotionally involved.

But he is not in this case. This killer knows nothing about the victim. And it's better that way. His client will already have an important reason for this guy to be taken out of circulation.

The dead man's eyes are wide open.

Pure horror is written all over his face.

    Nameless Horror.

A look that looks like frozen.

It shouldn't stay that way, the killer thinks.

A little peace, everyone deserves that. This is especially true for the dead, because they can no longer harm anyone.

So the killer does what he always does when he's done a job.

He closes the dead man's eyes.

    It looks really peaceful now.

And if it weren't for the terrible bullet wound at heart level, you might even think he was a man just sleeping.

    That's right, the killer thinks.

Then, before the killer leaves the room, he also turns off the lights.

    He can't help it.

He is a down-to-earth guy and order is very important to him.

    However...

There is still a prequel to this deadly episode. And there is something that will happen shortly after.

    But always in order...

Although it actually hardly matters in which order you tell these events. It always pretty much comes down to the same thing!

    Listen, said the Lebanese.

And Detective Chief Inspector Oliver 'Ollie' Medina listened.

They were sitting in a topless bar, somewhere in Berlin. But Ollie had no eyes for the women's naked breasts. He had only one ear for the Lebanese, because he knew that it was now about his life. And for the lives of the people he loved. He was up to his neck in water. And the Lebanese knew it. Ollie was not someone who was normally sensitive to pressure. But in this desperate situation, he was. And the Lebanese knew that, too.

The Lebanese was the head of a large clan. He knew how to lead people. How to direct them. How to get them to do what he wanted. He was a master at it. Under different circumstances, he might have become a successful politician. But circumstances hadn't intended that. So he had become something else. Someone who ALSO had power.

    Almost like a politician.

    Almost...

The matter is quite simple, said the Lebanese. One of the bare-breasted waitresses put his mocha down for him. Her large breasts moved as she did so.

Really no champagne? the woman asked.

    No, said the Lebanese man.

    Then you loosen up!

Am easy-going enough, said the Lebanese. Am the most relaxed person in the world.

She laughed. Her breasts jiggled as she did so.

Even without champagne I'm loose, said the Lebanese, and she did him the favor and laughed again, so that her breasts moved again.

He looked after her briefly as she left.

    The Lebanese took a sip.

Ollie knew that the Lebanese generally did not drink alcohol. Not because he was a good Muslim, but because he hated it when control slipped away. And in any situation. He was the leader. The boss. Always and everywhere.

But that only worked as long as you were clear and sober.

So watch out, here's the deal, the Lebanese said. You kill a few people for me every now and then. It's not anybody you have to feel remorse about. These are all people that even a cop as righteous as you would say: They had it coming.

    Oh, really? said Ollie.

    Yes.

    I don't know...

    I understand your hesitation.

    Really?

    But the bottom line....

    Yes?

...you will do as I say.

    Sounds a little cocky.

The security of experience. Nothing more.

You can call it whatever you want.

Just realize this: it's really only about people who deserve to die.

    Sure...

    Pigs, then.

    Sure.

The Lebanese smiled cautiously. Apart from the fact that you probably secretly think that I deserved that, too: the fact that they are pig-dogs makes things a little easier. Personally, I've also been forced to kill nice people. Can the situation require times. But I always do it myself. I would never ask someone else to do that.

You seem really considerate, Ollie said.

    Have a soft heart.

    Sure.

As I said, I would never ask someone else to kill a nice person. That's the kind of thing you do yourself as a leader. On principle.

And you delegate the murders of the assholes.

    That's right.

You don't really think I'm going to go for it!

Hear me out first, Ollie. I can call you that, can't I?

    Fine by me.

    I'm your friend, Ollie.

    Well...

    What?

Let's not get carried away! said Ollie.

    You think I'm exaggerating?

    A little bit!

    I mean well by you.

    Like this?

    Most definitely.

    If you say so...

So, Ollie, you take out a few lousy bastards for me every now and then. Advantage for me: they're gone. Advantage for you: You don't have to deal with those people later on duty, and you can take better care of the really tough cases.

That's touching, the way you care about upholding the law.

We actually do a pretty similar job, Ollie. You for the state, me as chief and justice of the peace.

    This is not official.

    How?

That you're a justice of the peace or something.
