CHAPTER I
I'M GOING TO WRITE MY BOOK, WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO?
Obstacles, impediments and imitations
The source of inspiration
Elizabeth Costello, one of the novels of the Nobel Prize Winner in Literature JM Coetzee, began with these words:
First of all, there is the problem of starting, that is, of how to go from where we are now, and right now we are still nowhere, to the opposite shore. It is only a matter of crossing, of building a bridge. People solve problems like this every day.
We are the same; nowhere. We need to cross to the opposite shore. We start from scratch looking to reach one hundred percent. They say that this is how the universe was formed; from nothing. I don't see why we can't do the same.
The beginning then is nowhere. One thing is clear: we must get out of there! We can do it in many ways. One of them is with a question that with its answer triggers everything that should come later, that is; the content of a book like this.
The legitimate question is this:
What led me to dedicate myself to this in writing books?
This is the answer:
It was not the only idea of economic benefits, that also. When I decided to write my first book, I was driven by my psychologist and by a host of adverse and very peculiar personal circumstances. I was going through a terrible trauma. My wife had left me after fighting for six long years with damn cancer. That, coupled with a number of terrifying family events, had me on the edge of madness. This was the source of my inspiration.
I clearly remember the words of Pilar, a psychologist:
Franklin, you have too much accumulated pain. It has been many years of suffering. You should look for ways out of all that. Why don't you try writing it down? Let everyone know what happened to you. Shout it out to the world! Maybe it's a way to free yourself.
So I did it. Following her recommendation, I wrote my first novel.
It took me two years and a few months to finish it. I told my full story; from the beginning to the end. When I think of her, I remember that she represented a real liberation for me, just as the psychologist had predicted; a kind of particular vomiting of the soul
.
At the end of it, I thought it was bit short on pages (I think that there were a little over a hundred), so I complemented it with family memories from my childhood that came to my aid at that time to help me cope with so much tragedy.
Another of the things that motivated me to write the story was that dozens of acquaintances, family and friends, every time they contacted me, the first thing they did was ask me to tell them the story of what happened. And I, in order not to repeat the complete story over and over again, I began to send them the text in digital format .
I was saying:
«It is a very long and difficult story to tell. If you want to know everything, read this book».
And that way I rid myself of them.
It did not help my mental health at all that I was replaying the details of such a terrible story over and over again. It is true that they say that if you want your wounds to heal soon, stop touching them.
Obstacles I encountered?
Several.
One of them was a certain psychological resistance
to tell things that I considered intimate, both from my own life and from my family. The overwhelming desire I had to escape the pain I suffered over the recent loss of my beloved wife helped to rid me of them. Each written page lessened anguish and suffering. It seemed as if sharing my pain made it more bearable.
Do you have to go through a trauma like mine to start writing books?
Of course NOT, only that would be missing!
Everyone is inspired and creates their works led by their own motivations. We will return to this aspect in more detail later.
What other obstacles did I run into?
Typical of all writing: semantic, spelling and grammar correction.
I knew that my writing was going to be read by other people, so I had to be
