Wetaskiwin's Lost & Forgotten - Kevin Saucier
INTRODUCTION
When we moved from Edmonton to Wetaskiwin in the fall of 2018 we had no idea what a hidden gem of paranormal activity there is in this small city of under 13,000. We had been investigating paranormal activity all around the Province of Alberta since 2013 and had all sorts of activity captured and recorded, but nothing could prepare us for all the locations with activity that we found here.
We played hunches and obtained approval to investigate several well known buildings in the city as well as a few lesser known locations. What we discovered in this tight lipped community was astonishing to us and we wanted to share the newly found paranormal activity with the public.
At first the tours at The Wetaskiwin & District Heritage Museum, brought in people very curious about the activity, but the COVID-19 pandemic shut the world down, so instead of bringing the paranormal world to Wetaskiwin, I decided to introduce the paranormal side of Wetaskiwin to the world.
What stories to write about, we had after all investigated most of the landmark locations and a couple did not give us any approval to release our findings, and I hope the board of directors at those locations will change their minds and allow us to release the findings and open their doors for tours once the pandemic is over.
The first few stories are not paranormal in nature but I felt they made fantastic stories to tell some forgotten and darker history in the area. We went to the Wetaskiwin Archives to research documents, days were spent combing over old numerous newspapers and handwritten documents to fill in the blanks for the stories you are holding now.
The title was not easy to come by, I wanted to incorporate the history, some forgotten and all those lost souls that are causing the paranormal activity in the area yet at the same time I wanted to make sure to tie the name of Wetaskiwin to it and include something about the tours.
Spirits Alive Wetaskiwin: Stories Behind the Haunt and Other Forgotten and Dark History, was way too long yes it encompassed everything I wanted, but not going to work. Just as I was finishing the last couple of stories Carmelita and I were just tossing title ideas in the air and boom. Spirits are lost and/or forgotten souls, and the book title just fell into place.
Our tours are Spirits Alive Wetaskiwin, select the EVENTS tab on our Facebook Page at facebook.com/VIPsparanormal and don’t forget to like us. Subscribe to our YouTube channel and visit our web page at visionsparanormal.com.
These stories are only the tip of the ice burg, with so much activity in and around the City and County. We cannot wait until we can investigate more locations and gain more stories to bring you in the next volume.
I hope you enjoy and keep in mind that all the stories are true.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
First I would like to thank my wife Carmelita. Without her love, support, and inspiration I would not have completed this book. She is my muse, my life, my everything in life and the reason I do what I do. I love you Cara Mia and I dedicate this book to you.
Alicia Lake, my step-daughter played the role of editor and has been one of our biggest supporters from the get go. Thank you so much Tink.
I would also like to thank Matthew Altheim, it’s been a short road but fun so far but he gave me the writing bug after writing and researching the pitch doc stories for our upcoming production together entitled The Haunt
. Thanks Matt, you’re a great mentor.
A huge thanks for Dr David Williams and his Staff from the U of A Hospital for giving me second run in this lifetime, I am happy to call him and Diane friends.
I would also like to thank everyone who came forward with their stories to share. There were many, however I had to select only a few that stood out so far.
And thank you to all who gave their approval to share the stories with the world; I hope you enjoy how I presented the stories.
LEGEND OF WETASKWIN
Long before the white man settled the area, the land was ruled by the Cree although peaceful in nature they did have their enemies. The Blackfoot would often invade the Cree territory. With the Red Deer River acting as the border between the two, Blackfoot to the south and Cree to the North.
For years the Blackfoot encroached onto Cree territory, following the buffalo herds northward on their yearly migration. Along the way the Blackfoot would attack Cree villages raping, pillaging and collecting as many scalps as they could. The normally peaceful Cree would in turn retaliate, so there was a constant state of war between the two tribes.
Legend states that late one summer the Blackfoot, who had been raiding deep into Cree territory made camp on the banks of Pipestone Creek. The Cree’s in the area were planning revenge and gathered nearby for the imminent battle.
The Blackfoot Chief’s after hours of deliberation decided to stage a night attack. The plan was to raid the Cree camp in the midnight hours, stampede their horses and collect a few scalps, battling all the way back to Blackfoot territory. A young Blackfoot Chief named Buffalo Child, the most decorated Blackfoot warrior, was elected to lead the attack but first he was charged with scouting out the Cree encampment. Travelling alone, he headed south to the low range of hills known today as Peace Hills, just northwest of the present day City of Wetaskiwin.
As fate would have it the Elder’s of the Cree dispatched a young Chieftain, Little Bear to make a similar scouting mission. Little Bear decided upon the same hills as his vantage point. The two warriors just happened upon opposite sides of the hill simultaneously the rustling of the bushes was giving each other’s position away. With each step the two warriors made their way up the hill, emerging in a small clearing at the top.
The two locked eyes, hatred boiling in each other’s blood stream, their huge Chief’s headdresses blowing in the cool summer
