    Introduction

    Each year, in a town near the Dordogne River, not far from Bordeaux, a performance takes place of the battle which ended the Hundred Years’ War between France and England. It is one of the largest open-air events of the French summer.

    When Aliénor of France married the English king Henry Plantagenet in 1152 – her second marriage – the duchy of Aquitaine was her wedding gift. For more than 300 years, until the battle before the gates of Castillon on 17 July 1453, Aliénor’s Aquitaine, the prosperous south-west of France, remained under English rule.

    Paradoxically, the inhabitants of Castillon did not themselves take part in this pivotal event in history. Protected behind their city walls, they followed the battle with almost as little involvement as the present-day spectators who watch the pageant.

    An open seventeen-acre slope at the foot of the Château de Castegen serves as the stage for this piece of medieval history, just a cannon-shot away from the actual site of the historic battle. The re-enactment of the battle towards the end of the performance makes use of the
