About this ebook

Her secret was never meant to be discovered.

It all began with a stolen dagger.

Amaleigh's life as an urchin thief comes to a crashing halt the moment she flings herself off a cliff to escape the king's guards. One moment she's a young woman, and the next is a blur of wings, talons, and a long-hidden secret that could destroy not just her life, but the entire kingdom.

All she ever wanted was freedom, a chance to choose her path and not answer to anyone. A chance to stop thieving and make something more for herself. The dagger was supposed to buy her way out of a life she didn't choose. Instead, it brings her nothing but trouble.

Freedom comes at the ultimate price. She'll have to make a choice—kill the prince, who happens to be her best friend, or live the rest of her days as a caged pet for her deranged boss.

Some loyalties can't be broken. Some pasts won't stay hidden.

    Dragon Chapter Heading

Trees blurred into a wall of silver as she ran through the forest. Her legs burned and each breath was fire through her lungs. She couldn’t stop. Just a little farther and she’d reach the cliffs where even the most agile tracker dogs couldn’t follow. The beasts’ snarls were closer now, maybe fifty feet away. The cliff twice that distance.

Amaleigh pushed harder, fighting through exhaustion to find the last bit of strength she’d need. Why had she decided today, of all days, to steal from the palace?

    And why that dagger?

Why not a heavy purse from one of the nobles strutting along the boulevard like a gilfern displaying his magnificent feathers?

Rot it all, but she knew why. To barter her freedom.

Blood and poxes! Pain ricocheted across her scalp where a branch tore a clump of hair from its roots. She kept moving, head lowered. Almost there. Can’t stop.

Baying sounded close. Too close. The hounds were almost upon her, the men not far behind.

There wasn’t time to adjust her speed and climb down the bluff. She’d have to jump and pray she missed the crags. Gods willing, she’d land in the treetops.

With a last surge, Amaleigh leapt from the cliff. Fly or die, she thought, and thrust her arms out. Given the choice, she’d rather not die this
