About this ebook

Edinburgh, 1893

Highlander Donall is paying an overnight visit to some very bohemian friends at their Edinburgh residence, with his handsome-but-shy partner Benjamin. Open homosexuality may not yet be accepted in Scotland, but bohemian is as bohemian does—and Donall’s friends are famed for their open-mindedness.

But after dark (and after quite a few whiskies), Donall and Benjamin overhear something that gets them fiercely hot under their wing collars. Their reaction surprises everyone—especially themselves. Can Benjamin overcome his Victorian reserve and embrace what he truly desires?

Has anyone ever asked you what a Scotsman wears under his kilt? Theo asked. He turned to one side in his damask armchair, lounging crossways across its arms, toes dangling in mid-air.

No, nobody’s asked me, Donall replied. And I’m bloody glad they haven’t! The idea of foreign tourists speculating on his nethers, understandably, offended his modesty—particularly since he was a Scotsman who did habitually wear his traditional kilt. It was uncommon attire here in the big city—Edinburgh—but Donall came from the northern Isles, and refused to follow the fashions. Besides, the tartan of his clan was in a fine shade of green, and he was quietly proud of how well it set off his chestnut hair. "Trust you to ask me a question like that," he tutted. Typical Theo.

Theo’s black eyes were mischievous as he picked up the glass of absinthe at his elbow. It is but idle speculation, Donall, he said with a grin.

Donall raised one eyebrow at him, but he wasn’t taking Theo’s bait and persisting with the ridiculous topic. He glanced about the parlor instead, admiring the room’s curiosities.

The Edinburgh home Theo shared with his lover, Violet, was styled after a very Bohemian fashion, the tenement flat all high ceilings and scarlet drapes, Chinese lanterns and incense, and artefacts brought back from their travels in India. Rather like the archetypal opium-den, Donall had always thought.

And Theo and Violet had colorful morals to match. They were intensely liberal-minded, involved in every sort of modern idea about Suffrage and Fabianism and Free Love. They weren’t even married. The whole city was merrily scandalized at the pair of them.

Donall had been glad to meet and befriend them, last year, and discover how very unconcerned with respectability they were. Certainly, it made overnight stays when he visited with his boyfriend, Benjamin, easier. Donall and Benjamin could be completely open around these friends. In fact, Violet was so astonishingly insistent on progressiveness that she would’ve considered offering the male couple separate beds a rank betrayal of her scruples.

Donall and Benjamin would not have asked for such treatment, but the thoughtfulness
