- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Amazing illustrations!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5You need a secret garden of your own to read this in.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I grew up watching the movie, and I'll say this is probably one of the rare instances in which I'll say I really, really like the movie better, even though a lot of the scenes in the movie never actually happened it in the book (I think it would have been an improvement!) but nonetheless, I liked it, it still makes me a little nostalgic even though I've never read the book before now.I absolutely love Dickon, though, he's my favorite in both the movie and the book.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I liked the way Mary changed her additude, on the first time she was mean and crooked all the time but her parents died on a disease in her house so she had to move to an place in Europ in a moor. She found a garden that has been lock up by the house owner because his wife died by falling down a tree. She made friend and grow flowers and made the garden beautiful
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Mary, a spoiled girl, is sent to live with her uncle after the death of her parents in India. Encouraged to get outside, Mary discovers a secret garden, waiting to be brought back to life. With the help of her new friend Dickon, she transforms the garden and the garden transforms everyone who enters. This is another one of my favorite books. This book describes the garden in such detail that it can help students imagine what the garden looks like. The students could write about what they would do if they found a secret garden of their own. They could also compare and contrast this book with the movie version as well.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A longtime favorite of mine, and now my daughters are coming to love it. The story of an orphaned girl who is sent to England to live in a huge manor house on the moors with her absentee uncle. She comes to befriend her bedridden cousing and a magical Yorkshire boy. The children find a secret garden that works its magic on all three of them and changes them forever. The "secret" aspect of the garden, which becomes a special place for the child characters away from grownups, is very appealing to chldren.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5What's not to love about this story. My daughter got this edition for her birthday and is delighted! She especially liked the redesigned cover and was thrilled that it wasn't her old 'falling apart' copy !
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This is a good book other than there is magic in it.

Four out of ten. eBook.
Mistress Mary is quite contrary until she helps her garden grow. Along the way, she manages to cure her sickly cousin Colin, who is every bit as imperious as she. These two are sullen little peas in a pod, closed up in a gloomy old manor on the Yorkshire moors of England, until a locked-up garden captures their imaginations and puts the blush of a wild rose in their cheeks.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Being a mother, I couldn't help but realize how much of an influence on the personality and health of a child is reflected in the care and concern of the parent(s). Reading this as an adult was quite different than reading it as a child.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I finally read this after all these years. I saw the movie as a child and thoroughly enjoyed the book. Don't read too much into it; it's a kids book on how a garden can heal you. Agree or disagree, it's an easy read and is something of a classic, so when you go to fancy wine parties you can brag about being well read.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is one of my favorite childhood books ever!!! When i was little we lived in this area of fort worth where our backyards opened up to this park, and it wasnt really a garden but i always thought of myself as mary lennox walking around (haha i definitely had her attitude!). Not only is this one of the most wonderful childrens books ever, it's a truly timeless classic: the best stories are the ones that are applicable to every generation. The story is the basis for one of the greatest musicals EVER: I saw the Broadway production when i was little and a few years ago I saw it again on the West End. Dickon's my favorite ;) For tradition's sake, I'm doing a reread!!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A sweet story of two children who discover the healing powers of nature and a pleasant attitude. The style of writing (c1911) is very descriptive and the author's point is made repetitively. The Yorkshire dialect could be difficult for juvenile readers but the concept of getting out and enjoying nature is appropriate for today's culture.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5After Mary Lennox's parent die, she is sent from India to Yorkshire, where, ignored by the adults, she finds a secret garden and a few other of the manor's secrets as well. I never read this as a child for some reason, but I enjoyed it a lot more than I had expected, to be honest. I think I had expected a more simplistic story, but it's quite complex (for a children's story) and the characters are well-developed as well (even if one of them tends slightly toward caricature). Very feel-good read.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I maybe one of the few adults who have never read this story as a child. I really liked the beginning of the book and overall the message of positive thinking and exercise that can make you feel good and give you a sense of accomplishment. I found the part about chanting and magic a little weird but perhaps I would not think this if I was a child reading it. Overall I think this is 3.5 stars.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5what small displaced child doesn't want "a bit of earth" to call her own?
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I never read The Secret Garden as a child, though I do remember seeing two different film versions of it. I'm not sure if I would have liked this as a kid - I want to say no because even then I was too cynical to put up with this kind of treacly crap, but I did love Little Women and Anne of Green Gables and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn so who knows. But wow, at the tender age of 37, this one doesn't do much for me. It's kind of charming in the beginning but then gets very preachy. I had been enjoying Mary's development from a bratty sour puss into an energetic little girl but then the book becomes all about Colin who is really annoying. There is a bunch of weird, quasi-Christian Science stuff going on, and I can't understand why the awesome Sowerby family would be at all interested in these obnoxious rich people. And I can't understand why I thought this was going to get three stars from me. Definitely more like two. And the ending was weird. So. Very. Abrupt.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5One of my favorites growing up
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5When i was reading this, I found it very good, but it caught me quite unawares, when there was slow build up, towards the end, which left me with a lump in my throat. Very powerful. Brilliant story.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Wish I hadn't waited most of my life to read this delightful book. I would invite each and every character to tea. How can a book be bad when it is based on the recuperative value of magic.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Not an exciting adventure, but a sweet story. I enjoyed the story probably as much as I did when I read it as a child. An ignored, lonely, spoiled child unites with another ignored, lonely, spoiled child and they have childish "adventures" together. I enjoyed seeing the children grow together.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I hate to rag on a book that many remember fondly, but this poor thing is a waste of great potential. An arch, magical, vaguely gothic first third turns into a middling second third and a downright treacly and tedious end. My kids cna discover this on their own; I'm not reading it to them.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This has always been my favorite classic book. I was impressed when the Book Club members suggested it without me having to mention it. I just knew then my new endeavor was going to be blessed from Heaven!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A young girl named Mary who was raised in India moves to England to live with her uncle after the death of her parents. The house and everyone in it are shrouded with mystery. Left to herself, she explores the giant estate and uncovers many of the secrets held by her uncle and his mysterious home. The Secret Garden is one of my favorite books. It is such a beautiful story and it's so rewarding to see the change that comes over Mary and all of the people in her life as the books progresses. I listened to it as an audiobook and enjoyed it even more. The book has a lot of dialect which can be hard to understand in print. Listening to the story helps to put you in the middle of it all and fully grasp the meaning of what is being said.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5"The Secret Garden" is a very light, easy to read book, great for readers, age 8-11. Although it is definitely not an “action-packed” book, it succeeds where many books fail – its incredibly deep, realistic characters. Mary, Dickon, Colin, and their animal friends nearly jump off the page. If you are looking for a captivating book to read, I highly recommend "The Secret Garden", especially if you need something to cheer you up on a rainy day.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I expected a little more from this classic.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I won this book in a quiz when I was eleven years old. It's way overdue for a re-read, but I remember absolutely loving the book.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5As a child I had always adored the Warner Brothers live action adaptions of Frances Hodgson Burnett's most beloved duo (Secret Garden and Little Princess). I never read the books as a child (my time was devoted to Goosebumps and sci-fi/fantasy classics such as Journey to the Center of the Earth). When I read Little Princess as an adult I was very dismayed to find out how much was different and as I loved the movie so much, I could not forgive the book it's vast differences. I am exceptionally pleased to announce that the Secret Garden is almost exactly the same as the movie!!! Huzzah!!!It's as phenomenal as the movie I've adored for decades.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Having just re-read "Black Beauty" and being disappointed, i was nervous about revisiting this book but, thankfully, my fears were unfounded. "The Secret Garden" was as delightful as the first time I read it many, many years ago.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5My favorite kids book.
