    Everything Frankie owns fits into

    two cardboard boxes and one Saint Laurent weekend bag that was part of a set, the rest of which she sold to fund her trip here. Frankie wobbles down the steps of the city bus she took from the transportation center downtown, mentally blocks every single thing she witnessed—and smelled—on her previous eleven-hour, multi-state bus ride, sets her boxes down, and shades her eyes from the glaring sun as she gets her bearings.

    Frankie spent her childhood in Norfolk, Virginia and most of her adult life in Chicago, and yet, if she were blindfolded and kidnapped and dropped right here with no further information, she would know exactly where she was by the shimmer of heat rising from the pavement, the crunch of the grass and shifting of soft soil beneath her feet, and the scrubby palm plants stiff against the rise of skinny pines. She can see across the flat suburban landscape for what feels like miles; far enough to see a distant storm gathering ominous black clouds. The air is thick, the sun harsh, the ant piles knee-high.
