CHAPTER 1
THE ABYSS
Just what are the entwined factors currently creating so much financial pressure on the average citizen? Listed below is a collection of issues that this author terms the abyss. It is based on data from the US government and independent research organizations. The list is long and intertwined. Any one of these factors can create financial problems and concerns for a wage earner, while more than one or most taken collectively paint a very troubling picture. The list giving rise to the abyss is always incomplete—necessarily so, as it continues to swell. However, it is long enough to grab attention. The items listed either cause negative impacts on the US workforce or are evidence of such.
• The already disturbing financial gap between the haves and the have-nots in the United States is accelerating. In the last decade, the wealthiest 1 percent saw their share of the nation’s total wealth grow from 34.6 percent to 40 percent, while at the same time, the wealth of the top 20 percent grew from 85 to 90 percent of the total. This has left the remaining 80 percent of all Americans to share just 10 percent of America’s total wealth.
