Cherry Lime Sunset - K.B. Krissy
The top of your head hits the dirt first, and then the rest of you tumbles down a slope, until you smash into the trunk of a redwood tree. Your head. Your hip. Your entire body throbs while you lie there on your side in dire pain. You can hear your iPhone vibrating somewhere near you. Yet, you just lie in the fresh dirt with the hard earth pressing against your tender body, trying to stop yourself from trembling. You want to cry out for help, but you’re not that kind of woman anymore—you’re independent now. Remember? you ask yourself.
You start listening to Rocky atop of the trail barking for help, but it’s irritating you. You just want to tell him to shut up. Slowly, you lift your sore, lopsided body with one arm and maneuver your legs until you’re standing on your feet at a slope in the humid woods. However, the sky remained gray and dreary on this February twenty-fourth.
You stare at your golden brown, red-nosed pit, who’s staring back at you, and still barking. You gently brush the pebbles, leaves, and dirt from your arms while the scrapes on your body sting, like hot fire. You touch the side of your face and inspect your hand. Wet blood marks the tip of your middle finger. In front of you, you spot your cell phone buried within the shrubs on the ground, and you reach down to grab it.
Ashley!
You sprout up tall at the sound of the distracting voice that caused you to fall off the trail in the first place. You look up and observe the woman in the bright red shirt, who knows your name. She hasn’t done anything to you, but catch your attention while you were running. Then you tripped over a tree branch and fell sideways off the trail down a slope.
Hey,
she calls out from atop the gravel.
I’m okay,
you mutter, mostly to yourself. You watch her scan the edge of the trail for a way down.
The woman in red steps away from the brawny-looking man she was walking with, and begins easing down the slope to see about you. The man is wearing a black beanie, a plaid shirt and black jeans that seem appropriate for the outdoors. You then notice that he has very strong facial features and you think, he’s kinda cute. Although your dog is barking at him, the guy remains calm, only peering down at you with his hands in his pockets.
You look over and observe the woman with platinum blond hair, propped in a bun atop of her head, as she carefully treads down the slope. Finally your dog stops barking
