Introduction to Mobile Learning - James Rice

    Chapter 1

    FOREWORD

Thanks for downloading an Introduction to Mobile Learning. This book was created by the Study It books team that creates English as a Second Language Textbooks for schools worldwide. The Study It team believes in Mobile Learning, Project-Based Learning and Flipping the Classroom.

Students, Teachers and School Administrators need to prepare for the 21st Century and Mobile Learning is the first step forward and the evolution of what we have accomplished so far.

E-Learning has given the students the opportunity to learn at home or away from the traditional classroom in either an online or blended learning situation. M-Learning has taken E-learning to another level by allowing students to learn ANYWHERE and within a context.

Mobile Learning means more than simply making books and notes portable or easy to carry around on mobile devices such as tablets or smart phones.

M-Learning allows students to learn through multiple contexts rather than simply online or at a PC. This means students will learn by: reading, writing, watching video, listening to audio, doing projects and engaging with different people online or in the general public. It is an exciting evolution.

We hope this introductory book will be a great jump off point for teachers and administrators to experiment with Mobile Learning, Project-Based Learning and Flipping the Classroom.

    What is Mobile Learning?

Mobile Learning is the natural evolution education is taking from E-Learning.

E-Learning has given students the opportunity to learn at home - away from the traditional classroom through the Internet or email.  Mobile Learning or M-Learning has taken E-learning to another level by allowing students to study anywhere and anytime and opening the door for teachers to reinvent the classroom.

One of the key, most obvious benefits for students is that they can study while traveling, on vacation, during breaks or any other free time they may have. Students are growing up in a world where they can learn anywhere, any time. But Mobile Learning is more than that.

For teachers, a whole wealth of new devices, apps and content are now available for usage that can propel the classroom into a new, more exciting direction. As educators, we need to prepare students for jobs that, right now, do not exist. Mobile learning gives students the opportunity to explore a new way to learn with tools that will become more and more commonplace as society moves forward.

Mobile learning is convenient in that it is accessible from virtually anywhere. Sharing can be quick among everyone using
