    CHAPTER 1

    GAME TIME

The locker room smells of sweat. A heavy hip-hop beat thumps as you and your teammates prepare to take the field for the biggest game of your lives.

As you strap on your shoulder pads, you close your eyes. You picture yourself standing on the field. The crowd is roaring as the ball is snapped. The game is on the line, and it’s up to you to make the play. You imagine every detail. You picture yourself making the play. Winning the game. Celebrating with your teammates. You take a slow, deep breath.

You stand up and pull your jersey over your head. Are we ready? you shout.

Together, your teammates respond, We are ready! Then everyone begins to shout and howl. You slap each other’s helmets. You slam your pads into each other. You work yourselves into a frenzy.

Your head coach looks on with a smile. This is your team’s pregame ritual. It’s how you prepare yourselves. It’s how you get charged up.

    Then let’s go! you shout.

As a unit, the team charges out of the locker room, following your lead. Together, you burst out onto the field, soaking in the roar of the crowd.

It’s game time, and a championship is on the line. Do you have what it takes to claim it?

Your heart is pumping as you peer into your opponent’s backfield from your position at middle linebacker. In the background, you hear the roar of the crowd and the beat of your team’s fight song. The smell of damp grass and mud drifts up from the trampled field. You glance to your left, where your best friend, Teddy, prepares to rush the quarterback from his spot at defensive end.

It’s the second quarter of the conference championship. You’re facing East High, the best team in the state. Nobody thinks your team has a chance of winning.
