The Daring Adventures of Char the Great - Alyssa Williams
The Daring Adventure of Char the Great:
The Boy
This is a story from long ago passed down from generation to generation. A tale about a young hero destined to protect the realm of Imperia. Along with faithful friends, our hero defeated evil and restored the rightful King to his throne. These are the daring adventures of Char the Great.....
Chapter 1
The fire cracked, filling the medieval home with a warm glow. A young boy of five sat on the floor, in-between the front door and the fire pit, playing with a homemade doll complete with a small stick and small shield. The boy was fighting with an imaginary foe, jabbing and slicing the enemy to pieces. The peasant boy played, waiting for his father to return home for the day. He lay down on his stomach and made the doll follow suit, calling to his fellow knights to continue the fight. The two struggled through muck as they crawled through a moat to get to the evil lord's lair, as they circled the entire cottage.
The home was a single large room. The kitchen laid on the furthest wall from the door, consisting of a fire pit and stone oven, a table and a couple chairs made of wood. Everything had been handcrafted but was never painted with finish, making it simple furniture. On the table lay a water basin waiting for the family to prepare for supper by washing their hands. Next to the stone oven was a small window facing the center of the village. There is where the Elder Council held the weekly meeting with the men. A strange orange glow came in from that direction through the window but the family didn't take notice of it. It was a quiet night with only the sounds of the fire to accompany their duties. The home smelled of dry hay and burning wood. Towards the back of the home, there was a small area where a pile of hay lay with a pitchfork sticking out of it. Above that was a small loft with a ladder propped up leading right to it. That was where the family slept in beds made of cloth and hay. The house was lit by a fire and small candles throughout the home. It seemed peaceful enough. As the boy continued to battle his foe, a maiden climbed down the ladder from the loft to the kitchen. The ladder creaked with every step she took. She was carrying a small wicker basket with several ears of corn in it. She glanced over to the boy and smiled. As she passed him, she brushed his hair with her hand, patted his head and moved on to the table. She placed the wicker basket on the table, took one ear of corn, and began to shuck it. When she finished the first corn, she set it back into the basket and threw the corn husk into the fire. She looked back at Char, while beginning to shuck the second ear of corn. Char, did you wash for supper yet?
she asked while throwing the shuck into the fire.
No mama,
Char reported taking a final jab to kill his enemy. He played a very dramatic death for the foe and made his warrior bow in honor of the fallen. The Maiden put one more ear of corn in the wicker basket and threw the shuck into the fire. She picked up the wicker basket and placed it near the stone stove. Turning back to Char she noticed how dirty he was. He had been playing on the floor near the fire for so long that he was completely covered in soot.
Come. Wash here in the basin.
Char crossed to his mother. He placed his hands into the basin, and began to wash his face. The Maiden continued to prepare the meal. The men worked in the fields just outside of town. They would go together to the fields just before sunrise and return together just after sunset. The sun had already set outside and as Char dried off, she realized the time was late and so was her husband. Your father should have already been back from the market by now. I need to begin preparing the deer. I wonder what is taking so long.
She looked out the window to see if her Squire was coming near. That’s when she noticed the odd blaze coming from outside. Why is the Fire Pit being used? There shouldn’t be an elder meeting for a fortnight,
she commented in confusion. Suddenly, Char’s father threw the front door open, he was young but very handsome, and there was a deep concern on his face. The Maiden was startled by the quick entry and screamed as she turned to see the intruder. The Squire was covered in ash and panting heavily.
The Squire noticed that his wife looked at him in confusion. The fields are on fire.
He ran to a space on the floor hidden by an animal skin. He threw back the animal skin and began to pry up the trapdoor. "Quickly, hide. Help me lift this and then get inside." The Maiden tried to keep her composure as she watched her love move about their home frantically.
"What has happened?" The Maiden obeyed, quickly walked to the floorboards, and helped pry them up. She held out her arms to Char, who was also startled by the sudden commotion. Seeking shelter from the fear, Char ran to her. He held on tight to her, burying his head in her shoulder. She stroked his hair to keep him calm and spoke in hushed tones.
The Squire reached to take the boy from her arms. Char come, quickly.
He placed Char into the floor. The Queen is attacking La’Amair. She means to destroy our village.
Screams could be heard outside the home, as if the villagers were being attacked. Terror filled the air and never ceased making both the Squire and the Maiden glance to the window. The Squire held her arm to keep them low and unmoved from the floor. The Maiden couldn't understand why the Queen would attack their village.
But we gave tribute,
the Maiden said looking back at her husband. He signaled to Char to sit down. Char's face was full of fear as he held his toy close to his chest hoping it would protect him from what made his parents so nervous. Squire got up and gathered small supplies for his family. He picked up a small knife and placed it in his belt. Running to the haystack, he grabbed a blanket and lantern. He then ran into the kitchen and wrapped the corn in the blanket. Rushing back to the hole in the floor, he handed them to Char.
"Her
